Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

I sent an email to Tammy asking what to do about the lab kits. I sent it yesterday afternoon, so I'll let you guys know what she says when she writes back today. It's probably something to do with the website just not being updated yet.

looks like they changed the lab kit link. Says more information will be posted on June 15th, 2010.

CPR Renewal Question - I have to renew my BLS CPR cert for school (it expires in Sept) and noticed that a couple of the providers listed by the ACC ADN site provide online renewal for the test with an in-person skills test required.

Wondering if anyone else has ever tried the online renewals and what you thought? Would I be wiser to just go ahead and do the in-class renewal (my current cert is almost 2 years old - not sure how much has changed).

Also does anyone recommend any particular provider from the ACC list for CPR cert or recert?

Thanks!

jdhaynes,

I just signed up with a provider who does the regular class at Central Texas EMS in Georgetown. I picked this one because it is held on Saturdays (I'm attending the 7/10 class) and its close to Round Rock. You can sign up online for this class if you go to the American Heart Association website and search for the BLS for Healthcare Providers. I was very surprised when I got the confirmation email because this class is also less expensive then some of the others I was quoted. This class is 2 hours longer then some of them but I figure I would make some of that up in driving time. She also sent a link to the study guide so I can review ahead of time. I'm sorry that I don't know any information about the renewal options. I also looked at the online part 1 option but when I searched for the skills test providers there were not many to choose from. Plus, I figure it would be good to have more hands on time for this.

Today I went to order my uniforms ... I had no idea we actually had a few options on our scrub tops! I thought we had to choose the unisex boxy ones, but the lady at the store had a few to choose from. Mine are sort of empire-waist with a crossover at the front.

Two uniforms plus coat and patches was like $118, but I also chose a Gray's Anatomy lab coat instead of the standard one, so it might have cost a little more. :)

@Purkinje

So were there certain ACC approved scrubs to choose from then? I was wondering how that worked

Yup! You go to one of the stores on the orientation page (I went to the South one), and tell them you are an ACC ADN student. They will show you all the choices and let you try them on to see what works best. Then you can try on the lab coats over the uniforms and choose one. As long as it's a long lab coat (not hip-length, but mid-thigh), the lady at the store said it would be fine for the program.

They take your order, you don't get to take the uniform home. You can pay a deposit or in full. They told me they will get my order in about a week. The patches are sewn on for you.

purkinje-- do we have choices on the bottoms as well?

Yup! There are elastic-waist, drawstring-waist, and ones that are kind of a combo. One of the elastic-waist ones also has a seam up the fronts of the legs that gives the appearance of a pleat. For those who have a bit of junk in the trunk, the drawstring-only ones might sag in the back (that's been my problem).

I believe the pants I got were flared at the bottom; I chose the ones that have a drawstring as well as elastic. All the stuff I got was Landau brand -- I think that might be the only brand available, but I wasn't paying super close attention.

They do have petite-sized pants options, too. I have very short legs so the regular ones were all about a foot too long for me. :)

Thanks vjune - I found the class and am also signed up - thanks for the tip!

Looking forward to meeting you at class.

jdhaynes,

Great news! I'm glad you are taking the same CPR class.

Purkinje,

Thanks for the info about the uniforms. It's good to know that we get to actually pick the style of scrubs that fit us best. How is the Gray's Anatomy lab coat different from the regular lab coat?

The cut was a little different -- less boxy, and with a lower v-neck (the buttons start at the waist, like a blazer). Also, the fabric was softer than the other ones. When you go to the store you'll see there are a few different styles of lab coat to choose from.
