Austin Community College (ACC) ADN Spring 2023

Published

Hey y’all, just starting a thread for all of us who applied to be in the Spring 2023 cohort. I know there are a lot of folks who've already applied once and been through the weirdness of the application process already and there are probably a bunch of newbies on here as well. I figured that it might be nice for us to have a place to communicate since it's an odd process where we feel like we are in the dark. Fingers crossed that we all get spots and we land at our first choice of campuses!

I'm glad that the waiting game for Spring feels infinitely times shorter than for fall and I'd be really curious how many people applied to this cohort compared to the last few when the HESI wasn't required. Given how long it took for ranking calculations to be sent for the fall cohort I'm betting ranking for Spring '23 won't be released until early-mid October which would still allow plenty of time for people to reapply for Fall '23 if they need to. As a second-time applicant who took RNSG 1105 in the Spring I'm just happy to be able to have things to focus on for the next couple of months that aren't school related since I'm still bitter that for the application one class counts but another doesn't even if they're called the same freaking thing in the course catalogue (make it make sense!!). ?

Hello! I submitted my application for ACC and now the waiting begins. Fingers crossed ??

Hey y’all! Is anyone else feeling a bit stressed about remembering a lot of material/ detail of past classes while waiting on your acceptance? I am only taking 1 class this semester as I am fully caught up, and I feel as if I’m falling so far behind on remembering material because of this waiting period. Has anyone began “studying” or reviewing notes of past classes or even Nursing skills? I hope I’m not the only one feeling this way! Good luck to everyone!

I’m feeling the stress of forgetting things for sure. I took skills last Spring and I feel most of that info has faded away. I got a job as a PCT so that I could put most of everything that we learned into practice in the hopes that I wouldn’t forget everything we learned. Hopefully we can create some quick study groups if we get accepted so that we can ace our first check off!

Hey guys, I’m from Cali thinking of applying to Austin. Is it really competitive as well? We take the TEAS here. Do you guys take the HESI instead?

I think it depends on the school if you have to take the HESI or the TEAS, it’s not a state wide decision. Austin Community College requires the HESI (although we didn’t have to take the biology or physics sections) and I’ve talked to some folks who are applying to other schools in central texas who only accept the TEAS. Also, I think nursing programs all over are super competitive. It seems like the private schools always have spots but they are soooo pricy!

ACC is competitive but it really is one of the best schools at least in TX to get your ADN from because they're highly respected by the hospitals in the area and their students are typically better prepared for when they get sent to their clinical placements compared to other programs. The school divides the cohorts among 3-4 campuses so your individual and clinical cohort is much smaller compared to other schools. They also require you to have all of the basic science prerequisites done in addition to pharmacology before you can apply, and after you have to wait for the ability to register for Nursing Skills/Fundamentals and pass that before you can actually get into the program. There are a few CCs in TX that don't require all of that or even all of the basic science prerequisites to get in and I guess they are completed while in the program e.g. Temple University.

With ACC they admit students based on application rank scores and each time someone continuously reapplies they get more points added to their application. You can view previous posts of the different future cohorts but during Covid the HESI was waived which added 200+ more applicants compared to traditional application cycles, but for Spring a generic email said there were ~300 applicants in total because the exam was required to apply. On the program's site there's more information on how the application point breakdown is done but you can try to be a more competitive applicant by taking certain classes and holding a license in healthcare which will add to your rank score.

Hope this is helpful!

Thank you so much for the info!

I have my CNA licence and I don't know if it works like here in cali but I have spanish advanced classess, experience in a hospital as a CNA, and the only B I have is in Physiology but the only thing it worries me is having to take the HESI. I did not get a very high score (78%) on the TEAS. I am highly considering taking that pharm class and apply!

Woohoo, the application page was updated! The “last updated” date hasn’t changed but it does state that ranking emails will go out the week of the 17th and provisional acceptance emails will go out the week of the 24th! We should all have some answers real soon!

The website was updated again since your last post and acceptance emails could go out as early as this week! Fingers crossed this emotional rollercoaster will be over sooner rather than later.

Hi y'all! I'm in the process of waiting to hear back for the Fall 2024 cohort, and had a couple questions. Did they tell you what your rank was compared to the applicant pool like 130/400 or something similar? Also if you did or did not get in, what were the points? I have no idea what a "good" or "normal" point amount is.

The waiting process is so long! And so anxiety inducing!

Thanks!
