My husband was recently offered a job in Augusta--we currently live in the Atlanta metro area. I work in the ED and I was wondering if anybody here had any good info on Augusta area hospitals. I have two years of level I trauma center experience, but I'm not set on working for a trauma center. I know of the major hospitals there, MCG, Doctor's Hosptial, University Hospital--what I want to know is what hospitals do you recommend working for?

Oh, and any info about which hospitals are offering a sign on bonus would be great to!

MCG is the Trauma center. University Hospital is the best as far as I'm concerned. Don't forget about the VA medical Center and Eisenhower at Ft. Gordon. All of the hospitals are offering bonuses for select specialties. I work at the VA, right now Medical Rehab and spinal Cord have high sign ons. you can check the websites.

Trinity hospital is also here. Aiken Regional is about 15 min. away but it is in south carolina.

cost of living is less than Atlanta and the Augusta pays fine for this area.

next question? a how important are benefits

Benefits are not important, because the job my husband will be taking will be at Ft. Gordon--he will be civil service. I'm just looking for a good hospital that is good to its nurses. Of course, I could be looking for the impossible! How is pay comparable to the metro ATL area?

RN pay may not be significantly different but it probably will be. I believe that University is excellent to their nurses as a whole without regard to title.

The VA (the only union hospital) takes care of their RN's. The union is strong and you will be working for the government and entitled to the pretty much the same benefits as your husband (i.e TSP). RN's also get 1 day every pay period leave versus the 1/2 day the rest of government workers get. I could go on. The reality is that RN's usually make the rounds and end up at the VA. The drawback is that the VA still runs 3 shifts instead of the usual 12hr tours.

The VA also has a payscale and is different based on whether you hold an associates, bachelors or masters. The other hospitals don't differentiate.

From experience working in the Augusta area and interviewing/dealing with HR of most of those hospitals I can tell you that University Hospital is the BEST hospital in Augusta for its nurses. MCG will usually offer a little more in terms of pay, but working conditions at UH are MUCH better. My husband is military so we had to move away, but I miss my coworkers and manager from UH constantly.

Put it this way: MCG's HR was the first to interview me and have a second interview, but it took around 4 weeks to get a decision out of them. With UH, I put an online application in on Friday, got called Monday, was interviewed Thursday, and hired on Friday.

Good luck and let us know where you decide to go!!!
