Attention! I need acceptance/ experience advice PLS

Published

*so i am currently a pre-nursing student transferring to gwinnett tech in the summer( anatomy and physiology 1). i have a son (4 months old). i currently work at a chick-fil-a (wierd hours) and cannot afford a baby sitter, even to study. they make more than i do so what is the point? i was reading that a girl in the pre-nursing category got into her program and that they make their options based on certain criteria, one of which was experience such as being a cna.

i got my*license*around 2 years ago not even knowing that where i live they bank the same as i did at the time and the only places hiring were mad far, about an hour and only wanted me on weekends...i forgot the whole thing because i am 1) a 7th day adventist so if i am gonna work sabbaths, it*won't*be every one, 2) it takes gas and almost no experience...3) i just don't have the passion for working with people who's families don't want to take care of them (personal opinion, hope this doesn't offend anyone reading). i would be willing to do it if in the end it meant moving forward towards my ultimate goal (labor and delivery/ neonatal/ midwifery). but at the time i didn't see any future use for it. i honestly thought it would help me make more money. here it's about 8 an hour...*

so with all of that information, should i still try to renew my cna liscence or should i just stick with what i am doing. i am currently taking one class. however, in the summer i will be taking a and p 1, then fall i will be taking a and 2, chem, and math, spring will be chem 2 micro and engl, once i finish those i can apply for the program next summer, take my teas nest fall, and be possibly(hopefully) accepted for spring 2014. anyone in here got any ideas????

3) i just don't have the passion for working with people who's families don't want to take care of them (personal opinion, hope this doesn't offend anyone reading).

that isn't just offensive, but completely and utterly ignorant. i definitely would discourage you from being a cna.

No need to get offensive. Agree to disagree but I would take responsibility for my parents when need be. It is a part of my custom. So please do not call my custom offensive or ignorant. I understand that even as a nurse I will be more than glad to take care of these patients, but it doesn't mean I should agree with their families choice. I love helping people but at the time I didn't realize that was all a cna does and my grandmother suffered a lot from cna abuse. How is that for ignorance.

And on another note, when I say working with these people, I do not dislike the patient. I just don't like the situation they are put in if that helps to specifiy what I mean. I would do it now but at the time, like I said before, I was not happy to go through watching what they have to go through. I wouldn't mind taking care of them now because I know I would do my best to take care and listen to my patients. Some just go through the motions.

I know here in FL at the local tech school if you have a current valid CNA license it gives you extra points on your app when you apply to the LPN program there. They don't care if you've -worked- as one. So here, that would help you to get accepted, yes. i don't know about Gwinnett Tech, but I am sure that whoever is in charge of the program there could tell you if having a current CNA license helps with your app. Plus here they make you take the TEAS before you can apply for the nursing program, but maybe it's different there.

Just something for you to consider for down the road.. what are you gonna do when it's time for nursing clinicals and it happens that you HAVE to do them on weekends or fail out of the nursing program? Two years ago you didn't have a kid. You do now. You may have to suck it up and work weekends if it means a better life for you and that baby after you graduate. I know the Seventh Day Adventists hospitals in Orlando don't close just because it's the Sabbath.. in their L&D departments, babies get delivered every day of the week and someone has to be there working to handle it.

Well you can't judge why a family places someone in nursing home. My grandmother had to be placed in one even though she had four adults around her 24/7 caring for her (truly). We didn't want to do it, but she became a danger to herself and others ( advanced Alzheimer). Sometimes it's because patients require true medical care families can't offer. It's sad when someone is hurt in facility like your family member and I hate to hear it :crying2:, but try not to have bitterness or resentment for other families who are loving their family members and doing the best they can to care for them. I agree there are some who could care for their elderly family members on their own maybe, but I believe in my heart most families struggle with this decision and use it as a last resort.

Your comment was judgmental, but it's good you cleared it up. It's hard when you are communicating on a forum. I'm not a nurse...yet. But I am a teacher, and I say if you have license, I would take the test to keep it. It's great to have on a resume and most schools around me give at least a point for something like that or take it into consideration. If you let it expire they might not. It's always good to have it to fall back on especially since you are a mom.

Good luck to you. I'm a mom too trying to balance it all.

In regards to all my reasons, they were what I felt in the past. I have no problem working as a cna or doing weekendsjust want to clarify since I notice there is a lot of issues with how I worded my initial post.sorry for any inconveniences or offenses.

I am aware. The same happened with my grandmother. However she was severly abused and neglected is 2 separate facilitiesmy family wasn't bad for it, she too had alzheimers, but there are some patients that have told me their families just left them for better or for worsei know there are special situations but either way no one wants to read the part where I specifically say it was at that time in the past. I have corset stated I have an interest now and that is my reason for wanting advice on this blog. Everything you all are saying I am well aware of. I must have just worded my initial post poorly and for that misunderstandong, I am sorry

And thank you BTW for taking my clearing it up seriously I honestly do not feel that way now. It was stating what I felt in the past.

NeoNatMom, GTC only looks at your GPA and Kaplan score: 50/50. No interview, no essay, and I don't believe they look at your other credential. So, the best thing to do is try to get the highest grade possible in all your prereqs, no lower than a B and study for the Kaplan exam like crazy when the time comes.

Okay. Thanks seventyseven. I will be applying for both gtc and gsu do u know if either uses a waitlist?
