My professor told us about this diagnosis, and I used it in my soap notes. However, when I look at the list of NANDA diagnosis, this does not exist... Can I use this as a valid diagnosis? And if so, how come its not on the list if she mentioned it?:stone

can i use this as a valid diagnosis?

yes.

and if so, how come it's not on the list if she mentioned it?

it doesn't have to be on the official nanda list. nanda encourages the use of diagnoses that fit any situation for which they may be needed. diagnoses are added periodically by nanda because they are submitted by nurses like your professor when a need was found for them.

my bsn program encouraged us to write our own nursing diagnoses. every nursing diagnosis has

  • a definition
  • related factors (etiologies)
  • defining characteristics (symptoms)

every "risk for" diagnosis has

  • a definition
  • risk factors

it shouldn't be hard to figure out what this diagnosis addresses. what is an occupational hazard? what specific occupational hazard is being targeted by this diagnosis on this care plan? what interventions need to be taken to avoid having this specific occupational hazard occur? and that makes this a valid diagnosis because it fulfills the requirements of an anticipated nursing problem and how it is addressed.
