I am in complete agrees with you. I dont think I realize how difficult it would be. Honestly, I emailed and sent my resume around to everyone. At one point, I was about to give up. Thank God that turn around for me : ) I believe, truly, Nurse practitioner education is greatly impacted by your clinical experience and the preceptor you have.
I agree with you about how preceptors impact you. My first semester of clinical i had two great preceptors and that i sort of modeled my myelf after (e.g. assessments, method of treatment, choosing certain meds over others, etc.) My last semester of clinical, i had a not so good preceptor whose methods were a little out of date (certain guidelines) and prescribed meds that were unnecessary to just to please parents because she didn't want to hear them complain (cold/cough medicine to kids under 2 yrs old, antibx and steroid ointments for birthmarks. Also not checking red reflexes and hernias, etc). I'm just glad i didn't have this one in my first clinical experience. Yes she has way more years of experience than me and i know the real world is different than what we learn in school but some of it didn't seem right to me based on my earlier clinicals.

With Spring semester beginning on Monday. I've finally secured a preceptor for Spring semester. I found out that it's all about who you know and being persistent.
