At the crossroads

Your thoughts, please? I want to be an RN but it's years away. I work full time in another field; pays good, but unstable. I have an interview at the main hospital on 7/18 for Coordination Care Assistant at a pay cut. Do I transition now; take anything I can get to get my foot in the door?

I'm a SoCal girl too; Glendale and L.A. Vegas is full of stuff to do and "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," so have fun! j/k ;) The Ponderosa was shut down within the past few years, but Virginia City is hoppin' and Tahoe is more gorgeous than ever...other than the huge fire they just had in South Lake Tahoe. They did a lot to keep the water clean and it's crystal clear these days. Thank you so much for your input, I don't know what I'd do without you guys on this site!

Hey RN_Pursuit!

I'm not sure where you plan on working, but here in Northern NV, they're throwing nursing jobs at ya. Just as a student, I've been recruited an incredible amount.

:lol2:

Anyhow, my personal opinion is that you need to focus more on successfully completing your prerequisites and getting into a nursing program than getting your foot in the door.

I worked full time at my a job in my old profession and got through my prereqs working full time, taking a full load of classes in the evening hours.

Now that I'm past my 2nd semester of nursing school, I've gotten a job as an apprentice nurse at a hospital here in Reno...upon graduation I'll work as a graduate nurse...upon passing the NCLEX I'll work as an RN...God willing!

I'm not sure if the environment is different around Tahoe. Where do you plan on going to school? If you have any questions about UNR, lemme know!

Hi Reno1978, thank you for your input. I will most likely be at TMCC and pre-reqs are going to take two years. Congrats on going to UNR, you made the cut! :yelclap:Is it as difficult to get into UNR as I've heard? Also, congrats on your Apprentice job; good for you. I volunteered at Renown South Meadows a while back with an apprentice, she seemed to benefit very much.

I'm 40 and so done with clerical office work, the sales environment, and working for small-business owners. There are no benefits and Renown pays for them. The kicker is that it pays well and my boss is really cool, but he doesn't know how long he'll own the business. How is school going for you? Thank you again for writing, fellow Reno-ite!

Cool! I did all my prereq's at TMCC except the few that you must do at UNR, so I can probably suggest teachers or whatever.

Entrance to UNR is GPA based. I got in with a 3.95, but I also went to college with the intent to do well and get into a nursing program. But others in my class had lower GPAs. The lowest I heard was around a 3.5. It's competitive, but not hard to attain.

School is going well - I can't believe there's only 5 months to go! I can't wait to graduate in December!!!

Holler if you have any questions.
