Hello folks,
Can anyone give information about ASU's RN-BSN program. I've checked out the website, but was wondering if I could learn some more. Do you have to have your license in hand to apply (with the timing of my ADN program, I may have to wait 6 months!). Any info would be great. Thanks in advance!!

An advisor from ASU came to our school during Block 3 and talked to us about the program. I don't remember whether or not you need to have your license to apply, but I do know that they admit students twice a year. Admissions are in August or January and the program is 12 months long. Classes meet one day a week for about 6 hours during the first 6 months. The second 6 months consist of a mixture of class time and clinicals. The schedule looks pretty do-able even if you work full time. I have the advisor's business card and can PM you her name and phone #.....

That was nice that they came to visit with you during Block 3. I don't think ASU or Grand Canyon knows we exist!
Are you going to do the RN-BSN? If so, when? I'm thinking about it but don't want to start RIGHT away in January after graduating in December. Want to wait 6 months. I'm leaning toward Grand Canyon - especially if I can get my employer to pick up the tab.

Hi Deanna!
I do plan on going for the RN-BSN or the RN-MSN. I looked into both ASU and GCU and I think that I like ASU's program better. It is 12 months long whereas GCU's is 18 months. My preceptor received her BSN through GCU and really enjoyed it. It was really convenient because the classes were offered at the hospital. She felt that the program was more geared towards the "experienced" nurse. Lots of papers and projects.....She felt that she really had to draw on her past clinical experiences...A couple of my instructors have told me that ASU would be the better way to go if I was thinking about an advanced degree. They felt that ASU's program prepared you better for a graduate program. So, we'll see what happens...GCU is tempting though because it is offered on site one night a week.......
However, I'm planning on working for a year before I go back to school. I really want to take the time to learn my new role and be comfortable with it before I add the craziness of school lol! Most of the newer nurses that I talk to say that it takes just about that long to not feel so overwhelmed with everything.....
Have you decided what area you wanted to work in? Any desired hospitals? I really like Oncology, but I still think about Tele. Most of my rotation this semester is on a Tele floor so maybe that will help me make up my mind.....
Can you believe we have less than 12 weeks left?
ttyl,
Thanks for the insight on ASU vs GCU.
As for a specialty, I don't know. I have eliminated a few....psych, ER and OR. I'm still pretty much open. I have requested Oncology for my preceptorship. We'll see where I land. I have really enjoyed just about everywhere I've had to work. The liver/kidney transplant floor was interesting, surprisingly I liked endo, and L&D. Really want to do something besides M/S but they always say that's where you'll probably start. I'm hoping this block we'll get a better experience for Peds than we got in Block 2. I'm thinking peds might be up my alley but I don't know.

HEY GUYS!!!
You've already applied for your preceptorships??? I think they're waiting to see how many of us fail before they allow us to, lolol. We're not applying until the very end, maybe even after finals!! They haven't told us for sure (we're sort of like mushrooms....):lol_hitti
I can't believe we're graduating so soon!! I'm ready, but then I'm not!! I know what area I want to go into, but not sure which hospital I want to work at yet!! It's so confusing and none of the recruiters will really tell you the options for schedules or benefits or whatever. I'm really leaning towards one hospital that is a bit of a drive for me. It's high acuity, which I never thought I'd like, but I actually like the excitement of not having the same kind of patient every day!! Plus we get the really hard cases and it keeps you thinking!!
As for degree programs, I'm with Mary, I'm going to wait a year or so to go back to school. I've already got a BS, so I might just go for an advanced degree or even go back and get my certification in ultrasound (it's another two years, but it's a work/study program and the pay is really great). I know that St. Joes was talking about getting ASU's RN-MSN program on campus, and they already have GCU's RN-BSN program, I'm sure Banner has something similar as well. Either way it will be nice to have someone else pick up the tab this time!!
We need to start a countdown thread...this has been such a long two years!!!
69 days to go!!!! (until finals, not counting the preceptorship 'cause once we take our finals it should be a done deal!)

do you mean they keep you in the dark and keep throwing s*!%?# on you? Hey, they have the same method at our school!
They actually asked us where we wanted to go for our preceptorship....at finals for block 3. Of course, they gave us no warning that they were going to ask us so we had no time to actually THINK it over.

.
Yeah, you got it. Same policy I guess.
No, no word about our preceptorships. I'm not sure if they've even contracted with anyone because they haven't even been able to tell us which hospitals we'll be able to choose from. Should be pretty interesting, I know it was quite the scramble last semester to find preceptors, I know some students didn't even get one.
Now I've just got to make it through this block....
