Hi everyone,
I am wondering I am being offered a position as an assistant manager in an primarily outpatient department(GI). This role is new to the hospital system. The number of direct reports are 7RN, 1 secretary, and 2 cna. my hesitation is the role is new, what if it is identified as not needed in 6 months then what. The director explains the need for the role is due to the fact she is at another site in the system 3 days a week. i am just unclear in this instant whether to leap on faith or fear the unknown. I really would love this opportunity to learn some management skills but unsure if that is exactly how i will be used. Her description of what this role entails is vague. It seems for the most part I will have to act as charge nurse to make sure add on cases are being done, and patients are moved in a timely fashion. The administrative component will entail payroll, disciplines and up keep of the department. The other side is relieving nurses when busy for lunches and breaks, which I don't mind. I am just concerned about future of the position. Any insight is helpful

Coming into a new position without prior experience is risky for sure. It's difficult to both prove yourself and the new position invaluable when you still need to learn it. This is not the best place to learn mgmt skills but not impossible.
You're going to to need to show how you and this new role improves things for the company. Financially, smoother day to day operations, improved regulatory and OBQI compliance, improved patient satisfaction, improved or at least no problems with staff mgmt.
