Assessing Functional Health Patterns with SLE

Published

Hello all!! I am a first year nursing student in an AD-RN program and my clinical patient for this week is a 20 year old female who diagnoses include SLE and UTI. She also recently had a miscarriage. I have been having trouble narrowing down the questions I should ask my patient's regarding their functional health patterns, and have got the basics down, but I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on what specifically I could ask this client that would pertain to her diagnoses as related to the cognitive-perceptual, Activity-exercise, and health perception- health management pattern as these are the ones my instructor wants me to focus on. Any suggestions you could provide would be apprecaited!! Thanks in advanced. ;)

You asked what specifically you could ask this client that would pertain to her diagnosis of SLE, so that is what I focused on. I have a slew of questions that go with these, but I narrowed them down to what I would specifically ask someone who had SLE. Let me know if you need the other questions.

Cognitive-Perceptual

Do you have any pain? Talk about and describe it.

What other symptoms of the SLE are a concern?

Does your appearance to others ever become an issue?

Do you have any difficulty relating or interacting with other people?

Activity - Exercise

Describe your current daily activity.

Do you feel you have enough energy to get your activities accomplished?

How has the SLE affected your ability to do things you want to do?

How has SLE changed the way you do things?

Health Perception - Health Management

How would you describe your current health.

How has your SLE affected your health? Is it improving? Getting worse?

What medications do you take for your SLE? Do they help your condition?

What kinds of things do you do to treat your SLE beside take medication?

That is a wonderful start thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have struggled with some of my other care plans because I was not getting enough information in my assessment so any other questions that you think might be especially important for a patient with SLE would be greatly appreciated as well so that I can come up with effective care plans!! I really appreciate your expertise!!
