It's wonderful that you are so positive and motivated - you must be working with some great nurses!

Keep in mind that what you are seeing/experiencing is just the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot more to nursing than just tasks, but since you can't actually peer into her brain & discover the underlying thought processes, you can't really understand how they are coming up with their decisions and actions. Your nursing education will also teach you to 'think like a nurse'.

That education will begin with the 'basics' and that may be disheartening as you slog through your pre-requisite courses complaining about "these have nothing to do with nursing". Please keep in mind that RNs are educated professionals - which means that we need to have a broad knowledge base and you will also have to complete the 'core' courses that your school requires for all bachelor degrees.

Fair warning - your college experience will not be the same 'fun and games' as most of your fellow HS graduates. You'll have to not only take much more challenging science/math courses than non nursing students, but you will have to make very high grades. It won't seem fair- but that's the way it is. You will need a stellar GPA to be accepted into a nursing program in your Junior year. No doubt about it - it will be a hard slog. But when you finally are awarded that BSN, you will KNOW you have achieved something remarkable!!!

And besides, you'd certainly want a nurse caring for you and yours to have a very good science education, wouldn't you? For fun, ask those nurses why they make the decisions they make. I am willing to bet their discretion and autonomy will surprise you.

I can see your enthusiasm and strong determination in becoming a nurse and what's more important than that?If you are willing and determined to do something, then definitely, you will be able to overcome everything including all the challenges in the nursing school. Sounds like you are taking a lot of the right steps, getting your feet wet a bit in the nursing world. I agree, there is so much more to nursing than what meets the eye. So many specialties and areas of nursing to get into. I would say keep up the work and brace yourself for a rigorous college experience, at least my four year degree was! Dedicate all your efforts into your studies, it will get you a lot farther than partying and goofing off!

Thank you all for your encouraging words. And oh I know I've yet to seen all there is to see. My mom is a nurse also and when I told her I wanted to be a nurse the first thing out of her mouth was "What? Are you sure?" Lol. She has been a nurse all of my life plus some and she said nursing just isn't the same as it was. It's getting to be a lot worse as far as work, and even the nurses. She said a lot of new LPNs just out of school don't know as much have they had to know when she became an LPN. Every older nurse I speak with say it takes more than a year to acquire the knowledge to be a nurse. Some of them apply for jobs as nurses and only have had their license 3 months and are on probation with state boards. I'm willing to do ANYTHING and study to my maximum ability in all my Pre requisite courses. I know how the competition is to get in the nursing program. One thing I was told by someone at the college is that if a womans app and my application are side by side and we have the same exact grades they would take the me over her for being male. I don't know how true that is. But like I said I have a good work ethic, strong desire and a 4.0 GPA. Class rank right now in high school is 1/492
