Dear Nurse Beth,

I have been asked to become a shift supervisor job on a very chaotic poorly run floor at my current hospital. From other staff members, it is burning down... I had already accepted a transfer to an ICU unit but now I don't know what to do. Seasoned nurses that have charge nurse experience 5+ years experience have turned it down they don't want any part of it. What must I do? I've been an RN for 4 years. Please help.

Dear Don't Know What to Do,

Run and don't look back. As a shift supervisor, you will be reporting to a manager who is running this chaotic, poorly-run, burning-down unit. She or he will keep you in turmoil and you will be set up to not succeed.

Congrats on your ICU transfer, and there will be other opportunities in the future to advance.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
