Article: NP Shouldn't have Autonomy

Letters: Nurse practitioners shouldn’t have autonomy | The Advocate — Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Wow, that MD is pretty brave is that his real name.

Does it seem like the physicians who do not work with NPs are the most vocal? I am stealing this thought from a physician who blogged on the topic a few years ago (I forget who he was). He pointed out that the ones that work with NPs usually don't complain about them. In the ER, the physicians love working with the NPs. In fact, one physician told a resident to quit seeing patients in fast track because the NPs can see the patients without him whereas he has to see all the patients the resident saw.

A family practice physician left a comment on the above article:

"Let's not forget these two little facts that NPs don't like to mention:

1. Medicare requires a Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA) regardless of state regulations. APRNs choosing to drop CPAs are choosing to drop the elderly and disabled.

2. A higher percentage of primary care physicians already practice in medically underserved and rural areas when compared to the percentage of nurse practitioners practicing in these areas."

Is it true that in NPs in states that are allowed to practice autonomously aren't eligible to bill medicare without collaboration with a physician?

He is a resident.... And regardless of the bill nps are treating patients.... It's not like we see a pt and some dr then goes and reassesses them. If you don't want your family member treated by an np... Don't make an appt with them
