Army RN deployments?

Specializes in Pediatric Emergency.

A little info about me. I was a medic in the army from 02-06 and deployed to afganistan and Iraq during my enlistment. I'm currently in nursing school. I'm trying to find out info about being a nurse in the army. I talked to a AMEDD recruiter and got some info but I'd like to gather my information from more than one source. Plus I just don't trust recruiter anymore. =P

Can any Army RN's tell me how often RN's are being deployed and for how long? Did you get choice of duty station? Signing bonus? I don't had a student loan since I'm using my GI Bill. The recruiter told me there's a $30k signing bonus but I'm sure that'll be different by the time I graduate.

Thanx in advanced

Specializes in EMT, ER, Homehealth, OR.

As you know from beng enlisted how often a RN deploys depends on their AOC. A OR,ICU, ER nurse has a greater chance of deploying then a med/surg nurse. But this does not always hold true for some.

Specializes in critical care: trauma/oncology/burns.

Doc:

It depends if you are stationed at a CSH or a Hospital (Army MEDCEN). If you are attached to a CSH and working in an Army MEDCEN, and the CSH is deployed you would be deployed for the full 12 months. If you are just attached to a MEDCEN (your duty station) you would be considered PROFIS and be deployed for 6 or 7 months total before redeploying back to the rear. Also depends upon your dwell time.

As Jeckrn stated, if you are mission essential and in short supply (5M or 8A) you would be one of the first to fill a slot.

You get to fill out a wish list of 3 choices. Most new nurses get their top 3. Some (like me!) don't.

Sign on bonus? Depends upon the fiscal year and how the Army budget is.

Good Luck in your schooling....And thanks for your prior service:heartbeat

If you want to go back in the army as an officer, I'd recommend PA school. You will find army nursing to be a very frustrating process.
