Army Nurse Corps FY2013

Specialties Government

Published

Hey everybody, I'm starting a thread here for those applying to the Army Nurse Corps in FY2013. I figure this might be a good place to get to know other future nurse corps officers and a place for the veterans of the ANC to pass on some advice.

Share your story and hopefully we will meet down in San Antonio this Winter/spring of 2013

Ill start with my story,

I am a 28 y/o critical care nurse with 2 years experience in a level 2 trauma center in Virignia. I passed MEPS at Ft. Eustis and have submitted security packet, letters of reference and letter of intent.

I am applying to the October review board for Active Duty Army Nurse Corps for the 66H8A(critical care) and 66T(trauma) programs( I am not sure if they are still running this one, but you don't get what you don't ask for).

I am happily married with a baby on the way, my wife is 100% behind a move the Army and I feel blessed to have her love and support.

The road to the Army has been a long one with a degree in Biology, stint as a drug rep and return for an accelerated BSN.

I love being a nurse and love working in critical care. I hope to serve my country in uniform treating service members & their families at home and in forward deployed units.

I want to be an critical care nurse and officer in the U.S. Army and I hope that I will get to meet all of you in uniform at BOLC, at MEDDAC, CSH or FST in CONUS or OCONUS.

Here's to all us achieving our dreams of becoming Army Nurses!

HOOOOOOAH!

Good afternoon everyone, So my wife is at BOLC and she has begun her classes. Please do not take this and not prepare but she told me that compared to Basic, BOLC is summercamp. Like all Army schools it is a hurry up and wait game but, the cool thing is she was offered for her first PT test to be the record for her class or she could take one at the end, so my advise is prepare and get it over with in the beginning. If you have any questions please ask and I will ask her and respond. Best wishes and again good luck to all.

Has your wife mentioned anything about what the deal is with internet at BOLC? Pretty much do you know if it is supplied in all the rooms, or if we have to bring our own wireless cards?

Thanks!!!

Bldg 1384 (hotel) has free wifi with slightly spotty coverage

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Both 592 (main lodging) and 1384 (affectionately called "the crackhouse") have free wifi. It's a bit spotty, as chudder mentioned, so my roommate actually got herself a mifi/hotspot thing through her cellular provider -- might be something to consider. It's not terrible, though -- I made it using the wifi. It gets a little bogged down because everyone is using it. There are also ethernet connections in the rooms, but ours didn't work.

I'll be at Ft. Sam all next week! Too bad it's too early to greet you guys in person -- I'll be gone before you arrive.

Since BOLC is less than a month away, my husband and I are trying to make travel plans. I think we are going to drive out to Texas, and than my husband is going to take a plane home. Does anyone know what we do on the first day (the report date)? Would I have enough free time, to check-in, and than drop my husband off at the airport on the 28th, or should we get his flight for the 27th?

Fort Sill it is, reporting on June 4. We hate Sill.

I'll be headed to Fort Bliss, TX

Fort Bliss is like Vegas compared to Sill. I did my basic training and AIT there. If I had judged my entire Army career only from what I seen at Sill, I would never recommend the military to anyone lol. Oh well, she will be able to serve and we will be together, that is really what is important. Just sucks because Reynolds isn't even a major medical center.

That's pretty typical for experienced nurses who are joining -- they go to a MEDDAC, not a MEDCEN, because they can hit the ground running and don't need the six months of orientation that new grads get. Did she have other choices besides Sill, or was it only Sill?

Everyone I know who has worked at Beaumont there has enjoyed it. :)

. It wasn't on our wish list, and we begged for anything at all anywhere else haha. She said she already decided and Sill is where she had to go, so we just left it at that. I guess it would be fun to ask take the kids to an arty shoot, I have some friends at the schoolhouse there, maybe I can get some cool things for my kids to see. Who knows?

I ended up at a MEDDAC that was not on my wish list, but no regrets. :) Just be prepared for her to spend 36 months there before PCSing! They are saving money by moving nurses less often.

I got Ft Gordon DDEMC on the ICU. Also, not on my wish list and nope a choice wasn't offered but I am excited for GA weather and I am sure I will work with some great peeps! It will be a huge change to work on a 14 bed ICU compared to the 70 bed lvl 1 Trauma center I currently work on!
