Army CRNA program Ft Sam Houston

Has anyone been to the Army's CRNA school at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas? I recently found out that I was accepted into their program through being a VA employee. I start in June 2008. I was just wondering if anybody coud give me details on what the program was like for them. Or if you will be attending school with me, PM me. I would like to get to know my future classmates!!

Does this mean you will become an Army officer or go back to the VA. What type of ICU experience did you get to qualify you for the program? I really want to know because I would love to work for the VA, but I always thought their acuity was not high enough.

I worked as a civil servant at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston for a number of years. Many of the nurse went to the program and said it was tough, but very good. Best CRNA's came out of there for sure.....course, those were all officers who served as military CRNA's. Didn't know that civilians could go. How weird. Are you ex-military or just VA employee? That's cool if they let you go. They wouldn't let us go as military civil servants, so we moved back to Fort Worth so I could apply here.

I will go back to working as a VA employee. I have to work for the VA for 3 years in return for them paying my tuition and salary while I am in school. You have to work for the VA for at least 1 year before you can quailfy to get this special program. Once you have worked for the VA for 1 year, you can apply to the program. You have to meet the CRNA school requirements, of course, to get accepted. It is very competitive for VA employees because there are only 3 slots open for all the VA employees across the US. I am a new grad, so I have only worked in the SICU for 1 year (2 years by the time I will start school). I hope that information helps!

The US Army's CRNA Program at FSH, TX allows active and reserve duty personnel as well as civilians working for the VA into the program. It's a GREAT program and best of all, it's free!!! I know many excellent CRNAs from that program. Ex military here. Applying for the entering 2009 class at Texas Wesleyan and Texas Christian Universities. Best of luck to all of you who are waiting on interviews, those of you who will apply and most of all those of you who have already graduated. Another GREAT military program is through the US Navy and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). The US Army's program awards the MSN through Northeastern University. The US Navy's MSN is awarded through Georgetown University and I don't remember what school (USUHS) is joined with. Best of luck to all.

i am still thinking about it. at this point, i want to be a civilian. the military was great but right now i am enjoying sleeping in. lol

Public Health Service nurses are also eligible. I know one who went through Ft Sam and one from UHUHS.

I'm a BAMC grad myself. We were still using ether then.

Just FYI: USUHS is its own university. USUHS (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences). USUHS takes CRNA students from AF, Army, Navy, and USPHS.

Luvmydogs, I realize your post was from over a year ago; however, I am currently in nursing school and I am setting my sights on CRNA school. My dad works for the VA and had mentioned something similar to the process you went through. How should I go about getting a job at the VA? When should I apply? Any advice you can give would be great.
