Hello all! I haven't seen a thread for the Arkansas State CRNA program that starts in January of 2020. I've sent in my application and have been reading (and re-reading) old A-State CRNA threads about the interview process and all that so I thought we could start one for this cohort!
Prior to our interview we went into a classroom and took like a 20 question quiz with random nursing related questions on it. Some people said they actually discussed some of the questions from their quiz in the interview but they did not in mine. I remember there being a rhythm strip but that’s all I really remember from it.
The interview was a mix of personal/clinical questions and probably lasted 20 minutes. Why do you want to be a CRNA. Are you able to commit 100% to the program physically and financially. How you handle a difficult coworker. How do you handle stress. For me with only 1.5 years of experience that was also brought up. The interview consisted of Dr. Black(the director) and Dr. Hammon (the assistant director). I’ve heard some programs absolutely grill you during your interview and it definitely was not like that at all!
For the interview process I feel you have to prove to them that you’re determined and prepared for the program. When they asked about my lack of experience my reply was that I had known that I wanted to be a CRNA since starting college and I wanted to do it before I started a family and while school/studying was still fresh on my mind so I worked hard and did all of the requirements to apply as soon as I was eligible. I told them I had held off on buying a house, a new car, etc so that I would be financially able to be without a job and depend on loans.
As far as being a SRNA, you have to be devoted and manage your time wisely. The first two semesters are super tough because you are strictly in didactics. We had class 3 days a week and the other 4 days “off” I was studying from 6 or 7am to 9 or 10pm with a few breaks in between. It has all been so worth it now that I’m in clinical and absolutely love doing anesthesia! I have never missed working in the unit once!
Hey all, I submitted my application in mid June this year. I’ve got 3 years experience in MICU and CICU and I’ve had the CCRN for a year now. My GRE scores are right at the schools “preferred” level so hopefully that is competitive. I took stats last winter and it was a very low stress course for me. I am hoping for a phone call soon. Good luck to everyone else who is going through the process!
@Asu2020 Thank you so much for taking the time to help us. much appreciated! By any chance could you please advice on what would be a good way to prepare for the test? Congrats on your journey so far! I have read your posts from last year and it is so helpful to have someone willing to post and share like you do.
As far my stats... I have 4 years of ICU experience( SICU MICU and CVICU) 7 years as a nurse altogether. 3.9 GPA on last 60 credits, CCRN, signing up for the Stats class at ASU, and GRE scheduled next month. Has anyone been called for interviews yet by any chance?
Good luck to everyone. I hope we all make it

Hey Asu2020! Thanks for checking in on us! The wait between application and interview seems like forever! I'm sure we will have lots of questions as the weeks pass. This year's forum doesn't seem as active as previous years though. Good luck in the rest of your program!
