Testing Exempt for Math Prereqs at MCC (x +1 = 2y)

U.S.A. Arizona

It has been ages since I have taken Algebra and Precalculus (highschool), but am hoping to test out of Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra (*Math 83 and *MAT120) so that I can just take College Math (*Mat142) at the Maricopa Community Colleges as a prereq to the nursing program (so that I don't have to retake Math for entry into ASU's BSN program.) (I already have a BA but I went to a liberal arts school that did not require Math -- just macro and microeconomics -- so i need to satisfy this prereq.)

Any suggested study guides? Barron's? Spark Notes? Algebra for Dummies? Should I just go buy the 2 textbooks used for the class off Ebay? Also, any insight on the procedure for testing math exempt? How hard is the test, what is the format? How do-able do you think it is for a math hating person (but good self-studier) to test out of the Algebra courses? Are there study guides associated with the maricopa test?

Thanks!

(* Note: I realize my MAT *course numbers* may be wrong, but for those who know what I am referring to and may be able to offer assistance -- I know my course numbers are close enough to allow for discussion.)

is this a math problem that you are trying to figure out (x +1 = 2y)? If so then x= -1 and y = 0. I'm not really sure of any math books that you should purchase. Maybe the ones from ebay will work.

Specializes in none.

MacMaster,

I do not believe that you can be exempt in any way from taking math:crying2: As you mentioned you have to take MAT 142... no matter what...

In any case, I dont remember book that I was using to brush up my math last year (I believe it was

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Algebra (Paperback)... and also Algebra for Dummies)

Entrance exam was not to bad after all. I am trying to remember what was there on the test, but after all - here is best advice for you - go and take it... it is free:) and you will see for yourself what you need to concentrate on. It is free and I do not believe they have a time limit (like NET or HESI2 ). Just try it - you might pass first time. And if not, go get a book and study what you had missed.

I hope it helped.

Good luck!

Thanks, The Russian, Right, I know I have to take one class and prefer to take MAT142....just want to test into that and not have to take the prereqs. I know I will have to do some brush up...I'll try the Algebra for dummies and then take the test and go from there.

Thanks also ms_sgr...I was using the math problem in a lame attempt at humour...:jester: But, I appreciate the assist!
