MCC or ASU?

U.S.A. Arizona

First off: Hello All! I am SO happy to have found this forum - it has been an invaluable resource and I've spent countless hours reading here! Thank you everyone who has contributed their wealth of knowledge here, it is greatly appreciated!

I am an NAU graduate with a totally unrelated degree to Nursing. I graduated right at the turn of the economy fallout, and wasn't able to get into the career I had studied for. I had to fall back into what I was trying to get out of at the time, which was (and is) IT Helpdesk / Tech Support / PC Support, after not finding work related to my field of study for over a year after graduation.

Immediately after graduation, during my job-hunting, freelance work here-and-there and scraping up anything I could get to survive, I had plenty of time on my hands. Some of my time was wasted in depression and defeat, but the surplus of free time ended up being a great opportunity in the end. I learned a lot about who I was, and began to learn more about the field of Nursing. I learned through discussion with friends, relatives, and acquaintances that I really wanted to pursue this career, as it fit my lifestyle and life goals.

I wasn't really sure which route to go, ASU's BSN or MCC's program. I decided that rather than to continue to sit around and try to figure it out, I'd start working on it, regardless, which was a turning point in my life, after my bubble of "great job and great pay after degree" was burst.

I went with MCC, since it was the cheaper of the two options, offered (roughly) the same graduation date, (Or so I thought at the time) the same certification, and due to the fact that I have no options for financial aid now that I have a bachelor's degree, and I already was broke and had debt from a previous degree. This decision also was before I had any knowledge of pay differences, difficulty in finding work with AND vs. BSN, etc. - I just figured an RN is an RN, and that is that. Maricopa CC had a year-and-a-half wait, and ASU was going to take roughly 3-4 years to complete, and Maricopa CC was significantly less expensive than ASU. So either way, after 3-4 years I would have an RN certification and begin my career. Also, at that time I decided I could always go the RN-BSN route if I decided to further my education in the future, and I would have the funds to do it, as well, since I would already be working.

Unfortunately, as life moved on, my time-frame wasn't entirely accurate, and I'm now approaching my 2-year-mark after deciding to take the leap, and have all my MCC pre- and co-requisites done. I am just now getting my application packet together to be processed by this application period. (Hopefully, it's getting down to the wire and still waiting for fingerprint ID... :-\) I'm hearing now that there is a 2-year waiting period, which means I will graduate, at the soonest, in 4 years.

I'm applying to MCC anyway, but I am strongly reconsidering my original decision. I am wondering if my graduation date would be the same if I were to transfer these credits to ASU and go with the BSN. Keep in mind that I've already got a BFA from NAU, so a lot of the requirements would already be met for ASU. I know now, after having a couple more years of knowledge, experience, and education, that the BSN would be a stronger foundation and would provide me more opportunity for career options. However, to further the complication, I'm the sole financial provider for my partner and child, and if I were not able to work, it would be a detrimental hit to our family. Yet another reason the MCC option is more appealing, as GCC offers a "night-and-weekends" RN program. I could keep my existing job, which, while monotonous and emotionally draining, is a fairly well-paying job.

Throughout this process I've found that there isn't a lot of clear-cut information on either program, especially in regards to the wait lists, the program requirements, expected graduation dates, etc. I can't get specific information online, (it seems to change every semester) and I get mixed reports from advisors, never really receiving any solid facts. I am currently working on a contract with my company and am temporarily located in Australia, so talking to anyone with any familiarity or "inside knowledge" is very difficult, due to the time/day difference.

I'm nearing what should be the halfway point of my career, but am still a few years from even starting a new one... It's very discouraging and emotionally-challenging at times. I'm keeping my head up and keeping my determination; I try to remind myself continually that hard work will pay off, and difficult circumstances builds character!

Sorry for the lengthy post - I know everyone has their unique circumstances and each is affected and affects how they are pursuing their dream. I think it's important to disclose mine if I want fair, rounded advice. If you've lasted this long, I appreciate it very much! I would appreciate any advice and/or input anyone has regarding my decision of waiting it out with MCC for an undetermined amount of time, or taking what I've already got and pressing forward with ASU and their BSN program.

Cliff notes:

1.)Graduated with BFA but couldn't get job

2.)Now working in undesired field with family to support financially

3.)Has credits from previous degree & pre- / co-req's for MCC program

4.)Just applying for MCC which has 2-year wait list

5.)Should I apply for ASU instead, and get bachelor degree, instead of MCC associate degree?

oh ya and I forgot to add that you can actually apply to ASU's program before you're completely done with pre-reqs. You have to have 13 of the 17 done before applying, as long as you can complete the other 4 before actually starting the program. Of course if you apply with only 13 complete though that means that all of the classes you've done will go toward your score, you cant chose to not include some in the 'select GPA.' So you might be able to apply for the next cycle now depending on how many pre-reqs you've completed

HI Tarabara!

I am also planning to apply for the nursing program of ASU, but I am still taking the pre-requisites at Rio Salado CC. My current grades are as follows:

ENG101- B

ENG102- B

MAT122- B

PSY101- A

Do you think I have any chances to be accepted in ASU's nursing program? Also, I am still thinking on which Statistics class to take, MAT206 or PSY230, which do you think is better?

Will it be possible to a list of pre-requisites from you? :o

I will greatly appreciate your response. Thank you!

Hi wannabenurse,

I am also in ASU nursing program..Since Tara has not answer your question, I can answer them for u

The two B from ENG101 and 102 will hurt your GPA for sure, however for MAT122 and PSY101 whether it hurt your GPA or not will depend on the rest of your preQ' grades. Remember out of 17 preQ, they will take 13 of them...and out of 13, you will have to include ENG101 and 102 (this is why the two B will hurt your GPA for sure), and 3 out of 4 science classes.

There is also a change in ASU nursing program that I think will highly negatively affect student in community college to get into community college. Look into ASU College of Nursing health and innovation for the change...or call the advisor.

By the time i applied, they still used the NET...The lowest score that got in was 5.68/6 and lowest GPA is 3.8..but I heard it got higher and higher every semester.

Ask me if there any other questions..good luck:)

hey wannabenurse, sorry for some reason i didnt get an email that there was a response to this thread until candice wrote. To add on to what candice said, the 2 B's in english may hurt you but as long as the rest of your 13 pre-req classes are As you should be fine. Plus, like I said they are now accepting applicants 3 times a year so at least if you dont get in the first time you apply you only have a wait a couple months before applying again instead of 6+ months. The change that candice was talking about is that students who apply with most of their pre-reqs from ASU instead of a CC will get a multiplier added to their score. So it might be a bit more difficult when applying against a lot of people who took their prereqs at ASU. However, many if not most of the people in my class took theirs at a CC. I know it sounds like impossible to get into the ASU program but its not. Just work hard and you'll make it. :) Plus considering how long the wait lists are for community colleges, even if you had to re-take one or two classes to get A's in them you'd still most likely make it into the ASU program faster than a community college.

I'm just going off my experience here as far as pre-reqs so some classes may have changed but the ones I had to do were:

Eng 101 & 102

Bio 201 & 202 (with lab)

Microbiology class & lab (205 and 206)

Chem 101

HCR 210 (ethics) , 220 (intro to nursing), 230 (culture and health), & 240 (human pathophysiology)

Math- general college math or higher

Statistics- i took STP 226 but i think just regular statistics should be fine

I had to take PHI 103 but I know they changed it and took this class out as a requirement i'm just not sure what they replaced it with

Psych 101

Nutrition

Human development

And a general elective (i took sociology)

Tara, Wat semester r u? Add on to your comment, if wannabenurse want to retake a class it need to be a higher level...this means have to be higher thAn 102...I did my preQ in college...I hope lyk wat u said that it wnt hurt ppl at college but I did the math..the max score for ppl at college is 6 while the max score at asu is 8...that is a big difference:((((

Hello Tara and Candice! Thank you so much for your responses, much appreciated.

Yes, I am aware that the ENG classes will greatly affect my GPA, but I don't have any plans to retake them for some reasons.

With regards of the higher level of Math classes, I am currently taking MAT187(Pre-Calculus), and I am quite sure that I can ace an A.

In the next 2 weeks, I will be taking PSY230(Intro to Statistics)-possibly, I can earn an A in this class; I don't want to take MAT206(Statistics) because it is harder, and I am more likely to receive a B. In addition, is COM100 and CRE101 required classes?

I have a copy here showing the list of the pre-requisites:

http://catalog.asu.edu/files/MAPPS_TAGS10/NUNURDBSN.pdf

I am currently studying at Rio Salado CC, and they no longer have the nursing program, so when I am done with the science classes(CHM,BIO,& FON) I might transfer to Gateway CC or other CCs that offer nursing programs.

I have done some researches, prior entering ASU, an applicant must complete an associate degree first, am I right?

I am sorry for the stupid questions, once again, will greatly appreciate your responses, thank you!

I am pretty sure you don't need COM100 or CRE101 because I took those, but I used it for fine arts or elective course. So if you already get A on those, you don't need it..

Use this link for preQ for ASU..I looked at yours and it is too confusing

http://nursingandhealth.asu.edu/files/programs/nursing/undergraduate/bsn/pos.pdf

You don't need an associate program to get into ASU..as long as you get 17 preQ classes that they require..

One advice..Look into the change that ASU is making right now..Tara and I talked about it above...you may consider to transfer to ASU for the rest of your preQ. That is my opinion..so again, call and ask them..I know the cost for classes is suck..but I did the math and the change really sucks...It is correct that not all people did there preQ at ASU, but also there are people know about the change and already start taking classes at ASU..It is true that they added more seats, but then from what I heard, the scores and GPA get higher and higher each time...I dont meant to stress you out, but I just try to give you idea and make the right decision..in order to get into ASU everything is about the score...They compare to hundred place of decimal so a tiny little really help..

Good luck

Hi again!

I saw MAT142 is a critical requirement, meaning I am "required" to take this class? Won't they consider math classes higher than MAT142?

Also, what is the "Elective" class/requirement means? SORRY for the stupid questions.

Thanks for the checklist. ☺

Yea, you can use precal to replace math 142...that wat I did so I am pretty sure. Elective is any class u want...jus pik one u like or best at n get an A:))) no questions are stupid...I knw how it lyk cuz I were once lyk u...ask me anything even after u get in cuz I am pretty sure u will have more than now...Good luck:)))

Thanks for the helpful info yelnik!

Quick update: After some workarounds with time zones & some flexibility on the part of April, at GCC, I was successful in applying for this period, before the end of January! Ended up having to scan/email my application, my HESI score, and then had to have my fingerprint ID card re-issued & sent directly to her. She received it the DAY BEFORE the deadline - Talk about close timing!

So now I hurry up and wait. I should be back in the U.S. this Fall, so I plan to nail out a few prerequisites for the BSN programs, that aren't required for the associates degree (Statistics, etc.), once I return. Upon my return, I also will be doing a lot more in-depth research on what other bachelor's options I might have. (Including possible loan options...) Unfortunately due to my work schedule, accelerated degree plans don't appear to be something possible for me.

So now that I've been confirmed to have been accepted, should I be looking for anything confirming it, other than the word of the (very helpful) Nursing Advisor at GCC? (I've heard the term "timestamp" thrown around a lot here...)

Thanks again all of you who have taken the time to help out a confused second-degree-seeking Nursing student!

Hi! How many months have did it took you to be accepted at GCC? I am planning to apply at their nursing program or AAS in Nursing.

Hello I am currently in the MCC nursing program, scheduled to graduate in May 2012. You have been very misinformed.

1. MCC does not have a waiting list. Every year starts with a clean slate. Contact the Dean of nursing for more info about this.

2. If you already have a BFA and you get an ADN you can go straight into a MSN. I only know this because it is the same track that I am on.

I hope this has been helpful. It seams as though you really need to look closely at your options.

Can I ask why you guys are saying to run screaming from private schools? Is it just the financial aspect? I'm looking into GCU, so that's why I'm asking. That's the only private school I would consider.
