I am hopeful to connect with any Psych NPs that work in Arizona. I am moving from a restrictive practice state to Arizona and would like to learn more about what it is like to work in an independent state. Is it simply that you are not required to collaborate with a delegating physician? Has anyone else made such a move? Any pearls of wisdom? Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated?

I do understand that there is a regional area to post this inquiry, but it appears to be dominated by interests in particular nursing schools.

My first position out of school, though not in psych, was in NM (independent practice). No issues other than to say I wouldn't open a practice fresh out of school. I'd give it a couple of years, when you start feeling comfortable in your new role.

I went from Massachusetts (mandatory collaboration) to New Hampshire.(independent) I had a few years experience prescribing by then. I was glad to not have it be mandatory and I had a good medical director to ask questions

There is an old thread on all nurses : "what are best states to practice as an NP"--might be worth reading. There is also a "Pearson report" which comes out yearly about NP practice in different states. Arizona comes out well on both. Autonomy is good. But It is good to know who you can collaborate with at a work site.

As a psych CNS, I am not allowed to prescribe in Arizona. I called them to see if it was possible- there was some vague wording in their application. The person I talked to was surprised I could have a DEA as a CNS.. So it doesn't seem like they are doing the consensus model.

Best wishes.

You are correct. Collaboration is not required in AZ and you can prescribe everything from schedule II to V. However, unfortunately, in psych area, many legal procedures involving court-ordered treatment and involuntary commitment in hospital settings require involvement by psychiatrists. Additionally, only psychiatrist can do ACT team there. Psych CNSs have never been recognized in many states (including Arizona) and I think this has nothing do with concensus model. Good luck in AZ. It has great scenery. I just wish Phoenix has more to offer. It is not the best place to be but it is a great city.
