I'm consistently impressed with the degree of mental health services offered in my fairly rural community. My husband, in the throes of a midlife crisis, is looking at delving into the mental health field as well. Wondering if anyone thinks that their area has it "right" or has been impressed with the level of services in any particular region.

There are some fabulous mental health resources right here in Western Oregon. We have a freestanding psych hospital with outpatient services in the same building, a world-renowned psychiatrist (Dr. James Phelps) who specializes in bipolar disorder, an integrative psychiatrist (mine) who does TMS as well as acupuncture, and many other excellent providers. There is also a children's inpatient facility nearby and a large teaching hospital just 25 miles up the road. Portland has Oregon Health & Science University as well. So if you're looking to relocate, you might want to check out the I-5 Corridor.

Pittsburgh has a pretty good mental health system. We have a large psych hospital who does amazing research. There is a pretty great program that helps individuals who can't pay, are homeless, etc...

Don't come to NY for that. Been working in the mental health field for the past several yrs n I'm sorry to say the whole system has deteriorated.
