Are you working for New York State?

Published

I just recently went to the NY state website and read information in regards to hiring for nurses. I also read the benefit and retirement information also. Are any of you working or have worked for the state? What are the pros and cons. It does look as if the state starts you off with a little less than if you would have went directly through a hospital. I'd love to hear what you all have to say. Thanks!

szccdw,

I believe most government employees will tell you that the payoff is in the longterm picture, retirement benefits, in particular. Generally speaking, the jobs are gentler to the spirit, more predictable in hours, full of vacation time, holidays, disability, opportunities to advance, and come with full healthcare benefits. Supervisors are rarely the hardcore workaholic and, if they are, they don't expect you to be. Check out the retirement package, in particular, and you may find why many are fond of this choice. The salary, however, is always lower. Good luck with job hunting.

I work for NYS. I am employed By DOCS. Its a good deal, if you can get hired. They want RNs with 5 or more years experience if they can get them. Nurse I (New RN) positions are rare. Nurse II positions require at least one year of experience.
