Are there waiting lists in Tx?

Published

I live in Arizona, but my friend lives in Texas and I was wondering if the nursing schools there have waiting lists like we do here. It's up to 3 semesters just waiting to get in. Thanks in advanced!

Yes, there are! Don't feel alone.

3 semesters to wait to get in? that's crazy!

I don't know about other parts of texas but here in Houston, you basically apply for the semester you want to start and it's your in or you're not. If you're not then you re-apply the following deadline. There are alot of nursing schools in houston though, I know for ADN programs there's atleast 7-8 around houston and then BSN there's around 4-5 universities. So maybe that's why the wait is not that long. I know that they have alternative lists which means basically if a spot becomes avialable for that semester then they could call you and you can get in, but again if not you re-apply next deadline.

We don't have waiting lists at my school. Acceptance is based on a combination of your cumulative GPA, your GPA in the science courses (A&P, A&P II, Micro, etc.), and on your NET scores. You have to reapply every semester until you gain acceptance into the program. It is my understanding that a few hundred apply every semester for 30 vacancies. I did accepted for the fall semester and I have completed all my pre-req's, as well as all co-req's.

It sounds like that all these schools vary so much about acceptance, pre-req's, etc. that you may want to check into whatever school you are interested in to find out there requirements.

Good luck to you!!

No waiting list here, but it can take a couple of years to get in. Acceptance is based on GPA and grades in A&P (also completion of pre-reqs). If your GPA is decent and you have ALL pre-reqs you shouldnt have too much trouble. I got in first try; they accepted 74 out of 300. My GPA was only 3.2, but I had A's in A&P. I also know some people who got denied, so they took that year to take other classes and brought their GPA up. They got accepted with the higher GPA.

I just wanted to chime in and say that for the most part in Houston and the surrounding areas, the schools go off of your GPA and your entrance scores. For most schools, your GPA rules king and for others they are on a point system and as long as you have so many points, you get accepted. There are no waiting lists, either you get in or you are offered an alternate spot... if not then you have to re-apply for the next period. However, I heard that UT Nursing Houston is not accepting applications until Spring 2010.... that is one of the hardest schools to get in, GPA certainly trumps. HTH.

I live in the Midland/Odessa area fo west Texas. The schools here generally admit 50% of the qualified applicants each semester. If you contact the school directly and send them your transcrips they will tell you right up front what your chances are of getting in-just explain your situation to them. Contact them at: www.midland.edu or www.odessa.edu. I actually went to both schools and found that I personally liked the instructors at Midland a lot more. Be warned though-we are in the mist of an economic BOOM! Jobs are easy to find in just about any field, but rents have doubled in the last 3-4 years and houses have done just about the same thing. Now, realestate used to be real cheap here-so it might not be so bad compaired to where you are coming from.

That's how it is in my area, too. My school receives 200-300 applications per session, and accept around 80 people from those 200-300.

Thank God I got in on my first application.
