I am in my final year of prerequisites for entry into an Accelerated BSN program here in LA. I have my BS and MFA in unrelated fields, have lots of management and even previous medical experience, and long for a commitment to nursing through a BSN and, hopefully a masters in nursing down the road. Here is my concern, from some of the forums here I get the idea there really are very few RN jobs--that the shortage is a bit of a myth propagated because nursing home jobs go wanting for the crappy circumstances they provide us. I need some feedback. I am going into considerable debt, dedicating my life to the career change, but if I am going to finish in 2 years (one more year of prereqs and on in the accelerated program itself), only to come out and find no work, I need to reconsider now. Some of your posts say there are lots of openings for OT and PT but not RNs. There are no locations on the posts, so maybe that is another part of the country. I don't see many jobs listed around here in the LA County area, but may not be looking in the right place. Anyone out there in LA County who can enlighten me? Are there RN jobs for new program graduates? Is there another, related field where the jobs are going begging? Help!
Thanks,
Pamela
experience does not guarantee a job either.....I know plenty of unemployed experienced nurses.
you guys are really worrying us! My husband and I wanted to move our family there to be closer to his grandparents his grandfather has Alzheimer's and we wanted to be close to the only real family we had that gave a damn about us and we truly love cali but I showed him this forum and others and some articles about no jobs in cali he also may have a hard time finding a CNC machinst job unless he can get into a aerospace or medical shop we are honestly considering staying in Texas and moving to San marcos around the Austin area I know some people there they say its good there for nurses san marcos was also named best place to raise family in 2010 very wonderful area I did a job search on Indeed.com for RN's and 2000 jobs came up not playing!!!! Texas has been good in the nursing department....the same search for cali only brought in 14 to 15 jobs ......like I said early where I live has no prob with new grads and is very shorthanded needs nurses very bad....
I am employed, but I am one of the lucky ones. It's just that so many graduates and increased nursing programs have happened, and a lot of retired nurses came back to work or experienced nurses took on second jobs because of either hours getting cut or their husbands lost their jobs. It's not been pretty here.
It's not uncommon to see jobs posted...but they often don't call. Either they already had an internal candidate, or they never intended to fill the position, just a fantastic union rule. You should be able to find something with experience. It just may not be as quick or painless as you would hope.
I hope it all works out for you.
Yikes. I was born and raised in orange county. I moved to Kentucky a couple years ago to finish school, family here, no wait and it was half the price. I planned on coming home asap. I know from friends and family how hard it has become the last two but I was still under the illusion that nursing was safe guarded. The last post was a year ago, any positive changes?

I moved out here in October and had a job by the end of November. I'm not a new grad though--I have a couple of years' experience under my belt. I don't have a BSN either, which put me out of the running for some jobs at the magnets...but I am in school for my BSN, and I think the fact that I want to work in psych helped me land a job.

No experience....probably even worse than it was 2 years ago. Most jobs have a good 500 apps for one position and most of the hospitals are still keeping their new grad programs on hold or severely limiting it. Sorry wish I had better news.

With the scarce available jobs now in socal, I'm just curious if hospitals (or any hiring establishment) would prefer a (say if both had 2 years experience) BSN nurse over an ADN nurse? Or does it really not matter?
