Hey! I'll be glad to answer - hope it helps some.

1. I graduated first as an LPN, then an assoc. degree nursing.

2. LPN since 1991; RN since 1996.

3. I never had to draw blood until I took a new job on a med surg unit in 2001 or so.

4. Education?? He he! Seriously, no education on the floor, except for "here's where the supplies are kept."

5. For some reason, the most challenging part to me was the concept that I was "pulling something out" instead of "putting something in" if that makes sense. For some reason, I had trouble with that - not sure why - especially since a little butterfly is easier to get in a vein than a 20 gauge angiocath.

6. The only real tip that helped me at first was to be REALLY nice to the meaner patient techs that could also draw blood because some of them could hit almost anything!

7. How often? It got to be pretty often esp. if it was a pt with serial H and Hs or PT/INR, or something. I transferred to the ER after a while, and either the RN or an ER tech draws everything. The phlebs don't come to the ER for anything.
