I would really like to know if it is ok for LVN's to access a Mediport (needle is in). The purpose would be for blood collection. Nothing more.

You should check your state practice act or facility policy/procedure before performing an unfamiliar procedure.

Moved to Texas Forum. Your best bet is to check with the state board of nursing (bne.state.tx.us) and, as Augigi said, consult your facility's policies and procedures.

LVN's are allowed by the state, but your hospital policy may not allow it. LVN's used to be able to access central lines at our hospital, but our hospital changed it's policy, and now they can't access any central lines, including mediports, PICCs, etc.
You need to check the Policy where you work.:monkeydance:

in my hospital lvns can access central lines (for blood draws, iv pushes (except cardiac meds) , iv infusions (except blood)).
the only thing that an rn has to do is the initial insertion of the needle into an infusaport or taking out a central line.
