Are LPN's still the charge nurses in psych?

Published

I have been away from psych nursing for a very long time. When I was working in psych hospitals, the LPN's were the "charge nurses" on the units. There would be an RN supervisor called an HSS who would come and visit the unit for 10- 15 minutes and would then leave to go visit the other units. What is psych like these days? Thanks.

I work in NJ at a 110 bed short term facility. The LPNs only pass medications. RN is always in charge.

Specializes in psych, geriatrics.

I work in the Boston area, mostly in Teaching Hospitals. At my current hospital (been here 10 years), I believe policy may allow for LPNs to be hired, but I don't think we've currently had any, at least working inpatient, for years, charge or otherwise.
