Are my chances of getting into nursing school gone?

Published

Hi everyone, I am in my fourth semester of community college and I just received a D in my A&P 1 class, despite my hard work. I plan on re taking it. My current GPA is a 3.0 because I messed up freshman year and got a few C's, and I also got a C in nutrition. My main worry is the fact that I will not be able to get into nursing school because of the C in nutrition!!! I don't have a second option degree because nothing else appeals to me!!! Is it still possible for me to get into a good nursing school if I receive A's and B's in the rest of my pre reqs?

I may not be much help advice wise but I have encouragement for you!

My first time through A&P one I finished with a C, i re took it and got a high B but i will say NOW in a&p 2 i have a STRONG foundation from A&P 1 and i think that's the BIGGEST thing. I didnt retain CRAP the first time through. And I am proud of my high B because I have been doing it all online and its HARD.

Re examine how you are learning and retaining information and go again. Talk to your advisor as well, this semester I was NEAR quitting because I probably will not finish chemistry with a B a C is going to be as good as it gets and that was HARD for me but after talking to my advisor and finding out it was okay for getting in to the program to have ONE C was like a breath of fresh air. Keep working, keep pushing and keep asking questions. You can do it and you'll feel so much better after you do because YOU did that, nobody else.

My advice is this, don't get into a private (sometimes also nationally accredited) school that costs $100,000 +. The debt is just not worth it. You'll be working to pay off your debt.

This so much!

If you really want to be a nurse, retake those classes. Yes, you'll probably need to retake them to get INTO nursing school.

More importantly, you'll need the information in those classes to GRADUATE from nursing school, and to BE a safe nurse.

A&P is the foundation. If you got a D that means there's some really important stuff you just don't get...yet. Go back and master it before you try to move on.

If you don't have the basics from A&P, you're going to be way over your head when nursing school adds to that and expects you to apply the base knowledge.

There are some expensive private schools that will take your money, a lot of your money, and deliver a substandard education. I realize there are private universities that are expensive and excellent programs; I'm not talking about those. Usually the schools willing to take people with Ds and Cs in core nursing prerequisites are schools that are in it for the money. Too many horror stories of people not graduating (but still having tens of thousands of dollars in loans to repay) or graduating and unable to pass NCLEX because the program passed them along without really preparing them.

Especially when you're young, a delay of a year or two can seem like a failure or an eternity. But as someone who became a new grad RN at 38, I promise that taking the time to front load your knowledge base will pay off big time down the road.

Good luck, OP!

I would suggest taking one or two classes per semester. That way you have more time to study and to focus on each subject. Also try not to take two science classes at the same time. Although it might take you longer to finish all the prerequisites, your goal should be to get the highest GPA possible for later when you apply. The sooner you figure out your learning style the easier it will be for later as well. Also take advantage on any study materials you can possibly find i.e. tutors, YouTube, khan academy, and various other A&P channels out there.
