Are Blake's (JP's) routine after a lap choley?

Now, back in nursing school I saw 3 lap choleys on my OR observation. It's been awhile, but I certainly don't think they had Blake's put in.

My MIL had a lap choley yesterday, was released this AM, and went home with a Blake! I didn't see it, she was just mentioning "the drain thing" which after some questioning I determined was a Blake.

I didnt know this was commonplace afterwards.....Is it nowadays?

It's not common, but not unheard of either. Surgeons preference for whatever reason.

Depending on the condition of the gall bladder and surrounding tissues when it (the GB) was removed.

I've seen JPs used a few times after a lap chole. It was when the GB was "borderline," meaning it wasn't far from needing to be removed in an open procedure. When the GB is in that kind of shape, there might be some oozing after the GB is taken out.

It isn't very common, however, it is surgeon preference.
