Are you angry about the NMC OSCE???

I wonder if there is anyone out there who, like me, who has been slogging through the NMC application process and has taken or will take the OSCE? Are any of you ANGRY about the OSCE? I am.

Those of us applying to be registered in the UK have been put through the ringer, been vetted in every way imaginable (references, one year of practical experience required, education hours, training hours, IELTS, etc), and the fact that they add a practical test on top of that is just redundant, unnecessary, and a huge waste of time and resources for everyone. Especially amid the UK nursing shortage, when they should be facilitating the immigration of well-qualified nurses, not hindering us!

I recently took the OSCE and failed the skills section for absolutely bogus and arbitrary reasons. But before finding out that I had a "partial fail", I initially came out of that test feeling confident, like I had done well, and there is no way they would judge me to be an incompetent nurse. But despite my feeling that I performed well, I also emerged from the test simultaneously angry and frustrated, for having just committed 5 weeks of my life to stressing, floundering through disorganized, overabundant study materials on the Nile website, and traveling across the world... all for a test that clearly has nothing to do with assessing a nurse's competence. All the OSCE succeeds in testing is our willingness to jump through meaningless hoops and pay excessive fees!

The fact that we are subjected to this psychological roller coaster is infuriating... especially from an organization whose bedrock is the holistic caretaking of all people!

And why the exorbitant fees? Why do we have to repay the fee if we sit again for the test? Exactly whose pockets are we lining? The whole thing just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm just appalled at what I and others have been through with the OSCE. I plan to appeal my test result and also lodge a complaint both with the University of Northampton and the NMC, who are the controllers of the OSCE. If anyone is interested, I will share what I write, and I encourage ANYONE who is frustrated to write to the NMC and make yourself heard!!!

Bit of feedback for people -

There was a big meeting between the OSCE centers and many different Trusts in the UK and lots of points were raised, its clear there is huge amounts of anger and frustration from the NHS Trusts over these OSCE exams. We are now working in unison to put pressure on the NMC. They are meeting with us in November and I will be there to put my two pence in.

The RCN are also challenging the NMC and have had a reply saying that it is going to be their focus once the TNA role is sorted.

Things will change, but you have to keep sending in complaints to the NMC to help show that no one is happy with these. Well, the test centres are because hey're raking in £1000 a go.

We've now hit nearly 60% first time pass rate at our trust with a 85% 2nd time pass rate and 100% 3rd time but other trusts and particularly nursing home staff are less than 40%. The whole thing is a farce, but change must happen soon.

I have been told that this Webinar is for anyone to attend and can share it for people, it is being implemented by the RCN.

Dear members,

Many thanks for confirming your willingness to be involved in future changes to the way in which the NMC assesses and registers internationally trained nurses looking to work in the UK. I have some good news for you.

Having spoken with the NMC a few times on this issue now I can confirm that they are looking to engage meaningfully on this. This will take a few forms over the next few months.

The first opportunity we have to steer this will take place through a webinar. This will take place on Tuesday 10th July from 3:30-4:30pm BST time. The webinar can be accessed here: Registration . Details of how to register are provided through the link but do please contact me if anything doesn't make sense or if you have any questions.

The webinar will focus on the following areas and your open, honest feedback is very welcome:

• How did you find the information needed to apply for registration?

• Did you contact the NMC's call centre or the international team? What was their experience of speaking to them?

• What worked well and what didn't work as well in the application process?

• Were you clear on the NMC's requirements? What were the challenges, if any, in understanding and meeting them?

• Did you have a named contact in the international team? How did this work?

• How long did it take from applying to gaining registration (if applicable)?

• What was your experience of the test of competence (including CBT and OSCE)?

• What could be done to make the test of competence better? What went well? Were there any challenges for you?

I would encourage as many of you as possible to log on and utilise this opportunity to speak honestly with the NMC about your experiences to-date. This is vitally important for them when it comes to assessing how best they can improve the system.

Some of you flagged that you were concerned about providing any personal information to the NMC. I have raised this with them and I have received written assurance that absolutely no personal information will be shared with anyone inside or outside the NMC and no questions or comments will be attributed to individuals in their write-up of the event. I will also be logging into this webinar to monitor how the NMC handles this.

If you are unable, or would prefer not to participate in the webinar then please do feel free to send through to me your answers to the above points via email. I can then feed this back to the NMC in a secure way.

After the webinar:

Once this webinar is done and the initial results shared, we will be looking to develop a workshop (probably at the RCN's HQ in London) to discuss in more depth what changes could be made to improve this system. This will likely take place in September. It would be fantastic if as many of you as possible could attend. Rest assured that I will look to secure the necessary budget to support travel and any overnight accommodation expenses as required.

I hope this provides some assurance that there is now movement on this area. Please do email me with any concerns or questions.

Very best wishes.

Can someone help me? I took my osce twice. On my second attempt I did not received any email saying that I failed the exam or no feedback at all. I only received the email saying that my application has been rejected and my NMC portal is now closed and I need to do a new application? Does it ever happen that NMC has a wrong update of our portal?

Call NMC overseas application number and find out why you did not receive your result. If it was a fail and they closed your application, you need to call them and pay £140 for your application to be reopened and your details updated accordingly to get you to the stage of getting another decision letter. All the best my dear. I was in your shoes but have passed now.

Thank you. I called them and I ask why my portal has been closed, they said that the overseas department has no idea as well and that they will email me in 1-3 working days. Is there any chance that it was mistake that they wrongly updated my portal?

Fingers crossed my dear. I pray it works out in your favour. Give them the 1-3 working days and make sure you follow it up. When I passed my OSCE exam, the system had issues and could not direct me to where I will pay for my name to be added to the register. I haunted them with calls and luckily they rectified it.

I hope for the best for you.

What emails did you received? Did it say rejected on your osce part on the NMC portal? That's what is written on my portal. í ½í¸ž I am just praying for miracle and mercy that this one is on my favor. I will call them again tomorrow.

You should be getting a third go even if you did fail, so I don't know why they closed your portal. Hopefully they can resolve this.

Hi all~

I am an Australian nurse bound for Royal Brompton in London. Still waiting for my DL after resubmitting some docs last week.

So just a few questions while I try to prepare for the OSCE (goodness, you guys know how to instil the fear of God due to this exam haha):

1. As I do not have access to NILE yet, will reading the Royal Marsden book suffice for now?

2. I read urinary catheterisation is only for midwives. Is this accurate?

3. Does your employer/the hospital help you prepare for the OSCE?

4. How long can I prolong the OSCE upon arriving to the UK and starting work as a supervised practice nurse? As I would like to get completely accustomed to UK nursing and not rush into taking the exam.

Jeez, I thought waiting for the DL was worrisome enough. Now I have this to contend with.

Thank you to any that help~ You can also reach me through [email protected]

if you would like continuous correspondence. That would be great too!

You can't work supervised practice nurse but I see some work as health care assistant until NMC requirements are met.

Urinary catheterization is not just for midwives.

Urinary catheterization is not just for midwives.

That is what my job offer entails though. I will be a supervised practice nurse (Band 3) with progression to staff nurse (Band 5) once and if (hopefully) I pass the OSCE. So I was wondering how long can I wait to do my first attempt? Or would that depend on the Trust?

Ah, well that information was bogus.

Thank you for your response~
