I just left a month ago. It is a very hectic, unpredictable work environment. Starting pay for new grads is around $25/hr. My typical evening on my floor consisted of anywhere from 1-5 admissions, dealing w/pt and family issues, and writing at least 10 notes/evening. My floor was very acute we averaged about 7 restraints (mechanical)/wk, if not more. It is very fast paced, at times overwhelming place to work. The staff I worked with overall was great. We had to work together as a team and we became like family. Mgmt of the facility an the hospital like a factory, with emphasis on getting patients in and out fast, regardless of their needs. Often I felt as though they thought of how much money was coming in to the hospital instead of the safety of staff and patients. We were never staffed for acuity; instead, we were staffed according to "the grid" which is the minimum amount of staff needed per DMH guidelines. Many times we had violent patients who probably should have been in a jail cell rather than a hospital room. It can be a dangerous place to work. A friend of mine was hurt this week and told my her MD to take some time off; the hospital has been reluctant to give her this time off. I will say I saw many cases, many patients you never heard about in school. I learned a great deal and was able to become a nsg supervisor in my time there. I do love psych and have continued to work in the field, but I would not recommend working there.

I would stay far away from this place especially as a new grad. They may be able to con you into thinking that their bad practices are standard.
