Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I just applied to the Entry Level Masters program for Azusa Pacificu University and the deadline was November 1st....has anyone received a phone call for an interview? They are very vague on when you might hear something so I just want to know if anyone has heard....I have a 4.0 in all my pre reqs and a 3.7 GPA on my previous bachelors...I have no volunteer work so im curious if im still competitive or what you guys have going in as well that have heard...I dont know if its going through the pile thing, or if they call the people they like the best first? Im trying to be patient but I just need to hear something!!

So I ended up successfully selling all of my textbooks on half.com, but I will send you an email to the one you posted above, so you can have mine, in case you have any questions

Alright, the Facebook group for the Fall SD campus has been created, just search for APU ELM SD Fall 2013. Can't wait to meet everyone :)

Hi KaurRR,

Are you accepted to the main campus. I am also accepted to the main campus for Fall 2013. When did you receive the orientation letter? I haven't received the orientation letter as well as the info package from them yet.

anyone in for fall 2013 cohort at the main campus (azusa)?

Dear susunhmt,

Same here...

any idea when APU would be sending them out?

I have no idea.... I guess at least in June we should hear back something. Please let me know if you find out something!!

Okay I will! :)

Ditto. If you hear anything please let me know too!

Do you know when orientation is?

We are supposed to be CPR certified and have all of our vaccines before then..... -___-

I feel so underprepared and slightly lost...hahahah!

Any info would help at this point! ;)

I took the a&p online through APOU...I was slated to take the chemistry for health sciences next (all of these were classes that I was choosing to retake since it had been a while since I originally took them so I wasn't required to take). There was major stuff going on in my life at the time i was to start the chem class so I spoke to my counselor...she said that of all the sciences that they offer online this one was the hardest. I guess the professor starts on chapter 10 on the first day and you are to know and be comfortable with info on chapters 1-9 before that. She said the class hits the ground running and is in a full on sprint by the second week. I opted to withdraw because it seemed like too much for me at the time) The good thing is the class is only 8 weeks. If you buckle down and prepare for the worst I'm sure you can do it. Also, it's easier to get into an chem online class than a traditional chem class. Online science/lab classes are much different than traditional lecture/lab classes. You must be very organized and procrastination will only serve to frustrate you (I figured that out :( ) it's definitely worth the convenience to take it online...but in a way it is also much harder...good luck and I can't wait to hear about it! BTW when are you starting at apu?

Can you give any advice to us noobies going in? How did the accelerated program work for you? Could you retain everything you learned so quickly and apply it? What was your week schedule like?

Now that you graduated, were you able to find a job right away? I hear mixed reviews that they dont hire nurses with a masters these days because of the pay increase of our title, theyd rather hire a BSN to pay less. Id love to get your opinion of everything!

Sorry I don't follow this thread on the regular I hope I can still be of help. Off the top of my head:

  • No need to buy all the books. I started out buying the bundle (didn't use most of the books) and eventually by the last semester was only buying the books associated with clinical courses (med/surg, crit care, etc.) and was fine.
  • I was able to learn things quickly (the program is really sink or swim) because I have strong study skills. Does this mean I was able to apply it? Sometimes. This is really based on the individual. Learning to be a nurse in the educational setting versus the work setting is very different. I feel lost at times, but I think that is the nature of starting out in a new field.
  • The week varied but for the most part I was in class once or twice a week all day and had a third day with maybe 1 class. Clinicals were one 12 hr day or one 12 hr and one 6 hr. It just depends on what rotation you're in.
  • I was able to interview for and receive 2 jobs right away. This is something of an anomaly. There are only 2 other people in my cohort that have secured RN jobs thus far (we finished in March and it is now the middle of May). It is very competitive, if I could suggest anything it is start looking for a CNA job after first semester and get your foot in the door.
  • You won't have your MSN when you first pass your NCLEX, just your BSN. I think if you tell future employers that you are in school to work on your NP it would work against you. Why would they hire someone who is going to leave in a year?
  • I'm not sure if having your ADN or BSN makes a difference in non-magnet hospitals. My pay increase for my BSN is only 50 cents more an hour. That's not a huge pay differential.
  • Lastly, know its ok to feel overwhelmed in an accelerated program and that it is completely normal to have fleeting moments where you are convinced that you won't succeed. Everyone feels this way! It is a very hard adjustment, more so if you have children. But you can do it! Just keep at it, find support in your classmates (they're the only who will be able to relate to you), and take any chances you can to relax, enjoy your family, and go on a well-deserved vacation during your break. It is well worth it in the end!

Hi JMart83,

Congrats on your new job!! I also want to ask do I need to have a CNA license in order to apply for a CNA job after the first semester?

Okay I will! :)

Ditto. If you hear anything please let me know too!

Yeah, I'll definitely let you know. I just got my CPR certificate last week. Now I just need to work on the vaccines :nailbiting:. Are you planning any vacation before school starts??
