Applying for Nursing Jobs...

Nursing Students General Students

I'm currently a nursing student and I will graduate in Dec 2009. I have been hearing mixed messages! Some people are telling me that I need to apply NOW and others are telling me that I should wait! Does anyone have any recommendations as to how long you waited? Also, when it comes time to apply...do you apply online, go to the hospital, or call?

I am still in school as well, and a semester behind you, so I don't have personal experiance to give you. I was reading one of those nursing magazines today though, and it touched on that. Basically it was saying if you are looking for a certain preceptorship/programs (i.e. versant, or a highly desired hospital program) it is best to apply early (even set up a a meeting to tour the hospital and meet with someone, to help you get a shoe in the door). As well it talked about how if you are trying to work in the area where the school is and your fellow students want to work there too, you really should apply early b/c of the influx of applicants. Also, if you want to get into a specialty as apposed to med-surg floor, you would have a leg up. My school had an accredidation review this week w/ the CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) and I attended a student meeting- they asked the seniors if any already had a jobbed lined once they graduated, and a few raised their hands- the CCNE made a point to say that they made a smart decision to do so. Application wise- I would visit the hospital first, then send an email to the charge of hiring, and make it a point to say you already visited the hospital and liked the atmosphere and would love to be part of their team as a new graduate. Thats just my two cents, and don't know much. I wish all the best in your application process! : )

If you are graduating in Dec 09 I think it might be too early to apply, as new graduate positions are currently being filled for May 09 graduates. It is probably best to apply when your last semester starts in August.
