Applying as LVN or RN externship

Published

Good day all!

I'm currently an LVN going through RN school.

I have about 6 months left of RN school and am looking to get a job to have while I finish up.

I'm wondering what is the better option for me...

The hospitals around here offer RN externships. I think of these almost as extra clinicals. In the fact that, we're still in school and undergoing more training while on the jobsite. The hours are usually along the lines of being able to work 8 hours a week, which is very reasonable while going to school.

However,

I have my LVN license and have thought about just applying for LVN jobs. The pay is there, but the hours can be hectic with school. Even part time, I'll still be needing to put in at least 2 - 12 hour shifts a week. My RN school is mon-thurs 8a-5p. So it's crazy!

Are there any LVN's out there that might have any advice or been in the similar situation? And if so, did you learn more as an extern or as on shift as an LVN? And what would you prefer is a better choice?

Thank you!

I worked as a LPN 2-12s every weekend and then a 4 or 8 hour shift during the week. Would any of the places that you work as a LVN hire you when you get your RN? That would be the best imo. Good luck.

I graduated with my LPN last May and was hired as an "extern" at the local hospital. I wasn't under my license and did nothing invasive. I followed other nurses and learned. That was my job....to learn (as told to me by my manager). I did this for the summer and when the summer was over I transitioned into an LPN prn role. They understood that I was in school and could work sometimes, and sometimes I couldn't (ie. if there was a test Monday etc). They have always worked with me and have been wonderful. I have now transitioned into an RN role at the same hospital.

My experience as an extern was invaluable. I learned sooooo very much that I would recommend an externship to every single person. There are a lot of great nurses out there so willing to share their knowledge and take "us" under their wing. Those nurses who aren't so willing, don't volunteer to take an extern. So its a win win. Help with the workload for the nurse....learning experience for the student.

Anyway Just my humble opinion.....Good luck

Wow!!! What hospital did you intern at?
