Applying for jobs before finishing nursing school?

Published

I have heard that some students are able to line up new grad nursing jobs before they graduate nursing school and before they take the NCLEX. I myself am about to start the fourth semester of my BSN program. Our program is five semesters so I will graduate in May 2018 and take the NCLEX sometime in Summer 2018. At what point can I start applying for new grad nursing jobs?

It would be really nice to have a job lined up before graduation. Also, my school is in California but I'd really like to move right up to Oregon after graduation. I'm wondering if that complicates my job search or if employers are generally willing to hire from out of state pending the necessary paperwork for state licensure.

Thanks for any info!

Now is the time to start thinking about exactly where you want to live and work. I love Oregon. Are you thinking Portland or someplace smaller?

Most bigger hospitals in cities hire from out of state, even if you haven't passed your boards yet. I know because I've oriented new grads from almost every state of the union.

I was thinking of southern Oregon, maybe Eugene or Springfield or Ashland. Portland is beautiful but wow is rent expensive there. I'd have to have a relatively high starting salary to live near Portland I think.

I was hired two months before I graduated, so three months before I took my NCLEX. The hospital's in my area want you to be in your last semester before you apply for a RNA position.
