Applying for job 6 months before graduating?

Specialties CNM

Published

I was told by one of the midwives that I am working with for my clinical that I am 6 months from graduating and I could start applying for jobs now. What does everyone think? Is 6 months a little to early to apply for CNM positions around the country? Any advice would be great, also if you could touch on what salary can be expected with my first position.

Thanks again!

I think it's too early---not like anything terrible would happen, I think you will just get a lot of responses telling you to reapply around or after graduating.

If they told you to apply the why not! But unfortunately I found it extremely hard to be a good candidate without my license. I graduated in may and did Hundreds of apps since March. I finally got my license in July and that's when things got rolling. Good luck!

i started applying about 5 months out, and accepted a job offer not too long after beginning my search. But closer to graduation, I got an offer from my dream job, and had to rescind my acceptance at the first job, signed contract and all, after they had been holding the position for me for like 3 months. I felt terrible.

So, yes you can start looking! But be cautious about accepting a job this far from graduation. You never know what opportunities might present themselves.

Thanks for the input everyone! Does anyone else have more advice or experience pertaining to this question? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

I guess I would also say that it depends on whether you're a known entity to the institution where you're applying. It's probably easier to line up a job several months in advance if it's someplace where you did clinicals, as opposed to a totally new place across the country. This is probably not news to you, but it's my only other thought on the matter. Good luck, there are definitely jobs out there!
