Applying to HCCS Nursing Program in April 2012...Questions?!

U.S.A. Texas

Hello to all,

I just have the most discouraging conversation with a counselor at HCC. I'm applying for the nursing program in April 2012 and I'm currently taking the prerequisites (A&P I, English 1301, Psych 2301) and I am planning on taking the other reccomended courses (A&PII, BIO 2320, Psych 2314) during the spring 2012 while applying for the program. I was told by a counselor, whose not affilated with the Coleman campus at HCC (the campus where the nursing curriculum will take place) that basically I wasn't going to get in the program because I hadn't completed the reccomended courses yet. This is very upsetting because I've been looking forward to applying in April all year and I figured since I was taking the recommended courses doing the application process then I would be in the clear....Any advice from anyone whose applied and been accepted who are in the same boat as me would be greatly appreciated! I don't have a problem with waiting til august of next year but it would put me a whole semester behind! :crying2:

I've been wondering the same thing. I've started HCCS this semester and was wondering when I needed to apply to the nursing program. I'm trying to get all the classes they prefer to have out of the way. That's going to take a little over a year and I would like to start the nursing program fall of 2013 (that sounds so far away) but I have no idea when I need to apply. I was thinking Fall of 2012, but I really have no idea.

Moved to TX Nursing Programs Discussion forum for better response.

Well it would depend on what you have completed so far by the time the application for Fall 2012 comes around which April 2012.....but I'm going to speak to a nursing counselor so I can figure out whats what....I contacted someone specifically at Coleman and thats what they told I should do instead of going on the words of a counselor at central who has nothing to do with program....It makes sense so I'm hoping to hear some good news on Thursday...I keep you posted

I'm also interested in anything you can find out.

Were you able to get an appointment with a counselor at Coleman? Or do you just show up and get a walk in? I am going to the stafford campus and it's frustrating that every time I walk in to speak to a counselor, it's a different person and I keep getting different information. I would LOVE to have a conversation with a counselor up there but I'm not sure what the process is of doing that.

Well I was told by the online coleman advisor that it is best to speak with a counselor at coleman because the counselors who are associated with the nursing program may not have all the correct information. I went and saw a counselor at coleman after that. It's very simple, you just go to the sign in desk and you wait to see a nursing advisor...it wasn't a long wait, only three people were ahead of me. The advisor I spoke to was very straightforward and was able to answer all of my questions. They changed some of the requirements so instead of the HESI we will be taking the TEAS we have to pass all sections all taken at the same time with a grade of 62 or higher. This is something I was unaware of and based what I've been reading on the forums I'm going to wait until after I complete this semester of A & P before taking it. She also told me that not having the recommended courses wouldn't hurt my chances of getting accepted but she did say that when your application is being reviewed a point system is used and the number of recommended courses completed counts as points as well but she said she couldn't specify how many points exactly. I'm going to end up taking Psych 2314 in the 2nd eight week semester just in case, that way I can focus on A&P II and Micro next semester. She also recommended that I apply earlier than the deadline and just keep in contact with the department regarding requirement changes, etc. I'm just going to do the best I can and try not to stress about it . I recommend going to a ER at coleman there are also advisors available during that time that answer any questions you might have... I hope this helps

Awesome, I am gonna try and make it to the Tuesday ER session at noon and talk to someone. I went to one in June before I was even enrolled in my last couple of pre-reqs and didn't even know what to ask them. I feel more prepared for that now that I've gotten on here and talked to you and others. Thanks for the info!

No problem...from one future nurse to another: good luck!

I went to the ER meeting today! Got a lot of good info. The counselor there told me that I need to take the TEAS, then apply to the health sciences program of my choice (adn), and wait for my letter to be able to take Pharmacology for spring. I am also planning on taking AP2 and either PSYC 2314 or Math 0312(only if I absolutely have to...and she didn't seem to think I would need it since I took college algebra years ago...and I even made a D and she told me the fact that I took the class was enough...it meant that I QUALIFY for college level math of any course if that makes sense) So now I am hopeful and encouraged and thinking this will work out and I will actually be able to apply (and hopefully get in!!!) for the Fall 2012 start date.

Thats the part that still confuses me, registering for the pharmacology course. I'm unsure if I should wait until I have completed the prerequisites for the program before submitting my application and hope they will let me register for the class during summer I before they make the final decisions about acceptance. And the fall 2012 start date is what I aiming for too :D here's hoping

The way the counselor at Coleman explained it was this:

1. Take the TEAS as soon as you can.

2. apply to the health science program of your choice

3. wait for the letter to take pharm and register as soon as you can (registration opens november 7 i think)

4. take pharm math test and get minimum 90% and you should get in the program.

From what I understand, the pharm math exam is well into the semester that you take pharm so I don't know how all that works. I am looking at TEAS study guides on amazon right now so I can try and take that test in the next few weeks if possible. then cross my fingers that I do well enough to get me into pharm...and we'll go from there. if I don't do well on the TEAS I guess I'll just try again....I'm hoping I don't have to go down that road though.

I'm so nervous.

good luck!

Let me know if you hear anything different.

Well I finally registered for the TEAS V exam I'm scheduled to take it mid-December. Hopefully as soon as campuses re-open after the winter break I'll be able to put in my application, classes don't start until 1/17, I just hope I get the Pharm class time that I want. How was the TEAS V? I've been getting mixed reviews about the difficulty of the test.
