Applying to Children's Mercy....

Hello everyone! I am an RN who recently applied online to Children's Mercy for a few positions. I'm in a slightly unique situation, in that currently I'm working overseas in Sudan as a nurse educator in pediatric medicine. I return to the US on May 15, and will be moving to KC then. I applied last week for some positions at Children's Mercy, as it's always been my dream to work there with kids. I had worked at a dermatology clinic for 9 months as an LPN/RN and at a rural hospital for 6 months before going to Sudan (time there - 8 months). And now I'd like to just work as a staff nurse in pediatrics.

So anyways I just thought I would ask you all some questions about CM:

-How long should it take for them to reply to my application? I applied about 11 days ago, and then just sent an email to HR today, just as a follow-up to my application. I haven't heard anything back from them. Do they usually take a while to get back to online applications?

-Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the application process? I.e. what they're really looking for, how to prepare, etc.

-Anyone actually work there? And how is it?

Thanks so much for your input. I appreciate it lots! :)

Good luck Whitney!!

I am a student in the St. Louis area, and just from previous experiences applying online with companies both health-related and non-health related (business world), my experience has been that sometimes you'll hear something or receive a postcard of acknowledgment; and sometimes you won't!!

Unless someone else responds on these boards otherwise, if you don't hear from them in a pretty timely manner -- maybe in a week or so, try a phone call directly to HR. I don't know if these electronic apps get lost in the system or what. Then again, you may just have HR folks that are slow to respond to anything either because they're busy or just choose not to...

Best wishes and welcome home!!

Hi there! I graduated last year and several of my classmates applied to Children's Mercy. It took them *forever* to get back to the applicants, including the applicants who already worked there in tech positions. My advice would be to not feel too badly about hounding them. Good luck!

Welcome to town! (When you get here, that is.)

Hi there Whitney!

I work there as a Tech and I love it there. It is the best place to work. It took them at least a month for them to respond to my application and my friend just got hired as a new grad in December and it took her a month and a half to go through the application/interview process. So hang in there. Don't be discouraged. What floors have you applied on? Sometimes that makes a difference as well. Best wishes!

thanks so much for the info! It helps to know that it's not just me, lol! I applied to PICU and 5 Tower, because those were the only positions open at the time, though more have opened up since then (I"m tempted to apply to all of them but that would probably look a little desparate ;). The PICU posting was taken off the job site so it looks like the 5 Tower is what I'm shooting for. I actually think that timeframe will work out for me, because it will be about a month before I get settled in KC and I'm shooting for getting a job by the end of June at the latest.

What is their interview process like? I'm sure it's slightly different for techs than for nurses, but do you have a group interview, questions on pediatric nursing, etc? I'm just trying to prepare after practicing nursing outside the States for a year and I'm a little rusty around the edges.

Thanks so much for your help!

I would go ahead and apply to the other ones. I work on 4 Tower which is the Cardiac Surgery and Liver Transplant as well as general peds. 5 Tower is alot of Ortho cases as well as Renal.

My interview process was pretty smooth. I new someone who worked there so I think mine was easier than others. They just ask you the basic questions about why you want to work here, what would you bring to the team, strengths and weakness, things like that. They also gave some scenarios and then you had to answer. Again I am a tech so I am sure that the Nursing Interviews are much different.

I interviewed first with a HR rep and then interviewed with the Nurse Managers on the floor and then got a tour of the floor I would be working on. It only took them a week to tell me I got the job. The longest part was waiting on the interview process. Hope that helps you a little.

Thanks for the info. I actually called CM yesterday and spoke to one of the recruiters that I've been in contact with, just to make sure my application came through, etc. He remembered me and said my info had been sent to the manager and he would email me today or tomorrow with dates for interviews the week after I get back. So now I just have to prepare myself I guess. And pray, lol! But I'm just happy I have an interview. :) Ok thanks so much for your tips, hopefully I will be seeing you around the hospital, lol! :)
