application of organic and biochemistry in nursing

"How did you apply organic chemistry and biochemistry in your work as nurses?"

I am a nursing student at Centro Escolar University Philippines. This is the question given by our teacher in Organic-Biochemistry subject. And I need to interview a practicing nurse inorder for me to know the application of Organi Chemistry and Biochemistry in Nursing.:idea:any idea?

please i'm begging..please give a reply..i really need to know the application of organic-biocemistry in nursing.

Maybe you can try doing some research?

You can't fully understand physiology or pharmacology without at least having a brief understanding of organic/biochemistry. Organic chemistry was of the most beneficial classes of my undergraduate career. I would like to take the entire organic/biochem series.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

Diabetic ketoacidosis and other electrolyte imbalances are all part of the acid/base theorires you learn in chemisty. Many hospitalized patients also receive IV fluids. Whether they are isotonic, hypertonic or hypotonic depends on the patient's need to have some chemistry balanced within their system. Medications - there is a whole world of chemistry there! If kidneys do not function, what effect does that have on your acid/base ratio and what meds are dangerous for people with renal failure???

hey actually i also need to know thw applications of organic chemistry in nursing,,,,tell me if any one can help me out

Organic chemistry is the study of chemical compounds that are primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen. Organic compounds are the type of chemical compounds that are primarily found in the human body. That is why the application of organic chemistry is so important to nursing. The hormones and enzymes in the body as well as substances such as like glucose (a sugar) which the body depends on for energy are all organic compounds. These compounds are involved in many body processes that get tangled up in diseased conditions, so we need to know how and why that has happened. Our food is based on carbon and carbohydrates--and combination of the words carbon and hydrogen, two of the elements in organic compounds. Our existence is pretty much dependent on the carbon molecule.

Go to your introduction to biology book and you can see somewhat of a hexane with glucose molecules. If you look into lipids you can see a ch2 chain. Nurses need to know a lot about nutrition right? Carbohydrate is important and even nutritionist need organic chemistry.

If you have a nursing book it explains that carbohydrates are Carbon with a OH and H group. However in organic chemistry it is a Carbon group with a OH and H in a fisher projection.

Also you need to know how a medication is spell and know the IUPAC name of the drug in Medical math right?

Im just in semester 1 of nursing right now, however I will tell you if there are more organic chem in semester 2 fliud and electrolytes.
