Application for Licensure prior to NCLEX

Published

Hello,

I am an American citizen who was trained in Canada. I have just finished my first year of nursing, and I am now planning on writing my NCLEX. My goal is to work in Portland, Oregon. However, other RNs I have spoken to suggest that I apply to the board of nursing in the state of Minnesota because the process is faster and most efficient. They tell me that I will have no problem working in other states if I do it this way.

Have any other international applicants done it this way? I wonder if this will actually cause me more problems than not.

please advise!

Thank you.

Any other tips on the process would be much appreciated. Cheers!

There are a couple of threads regarding application for licensure but one thing you do have to be aware of even if applying to another state and endorse you may find the BON still requires you to meet their requirements for foreign trained nurse.

One must apply for licensure and be granted permission to sit for the NCLEX exam.

Please be aware that you will still need to meet the requirements of the new state before they will permit you to endorse. They currently require the CES, that is a credentials evaluation that is done thru CGFNS; even to endorse. None of the requirements get waived.

The NCLEX exam has reciprocity meaning that the results are accepted in all 50 states, but that does not mean that educational requirements are automatically accepted. Each application submitted will require approval of that specific BON. And each state can set their own requirements.
