Apartment Search in CT--Brainstorming needed

Where to look for affordable digs for one couple with one cat...Buying a house in Trumble, Milford areas is possible, but renting for a year while looking is most likely what we'll need to do. Newspapers, and the usual apartment complexes have not been either helpful/and or appealing. Any ideas where to search? We are responsible professionals.

i used to live in Milford and still have friends/family there. We always got lucky through word of mouth as the area can be expensive and some are not so desirable. Used to live in Devon section and loved being by the beach! I would drive around to find for rent signs (best way to find a cheap rental) as well as contact real estate agents as a larger proportion of landlords use them for rentals than here in NH where I live now.

Check out http://www.craigslist.org. There is a listing of cities on the right hand side of the page. There is one for New Haven on which I remember seeing housing ads for Milford, but check for other CT cities. Many people post housing for rent on this website, as well as buy and sell things, &c.
