Anyone work at REX or Durham Reg. Hospital?

Published

I am moving from MA to NC, and have interviewed at both Durham Regional and REX, Both seemed nice, and both seem to have really good programs, Rex is closer to where I will live and does pay a little more, but I was wondering if anyone works at either of these or knows anyone who does? I just want to get more info on each, in-case I receive an offer from either. I interviewed for adult med, and was most interested in Rex's Neuro unit.

Please send anything you may know!

Thanks :typing

Just wanted to say I don't work at Rex yet, but I will be starting there as a new grad in the ED on July 28th. I really liked it on my interview and have heard nothing but good things about Rex.

Hello,

I worked at Rex from 2003 until 2005..moved to PA and am relocating back to Raleigh next week and am going back to REX. I have worked at UNC and REX was my frist choice, it is a great hospital. VERY nurse friendly, magnet status and recently named on of the top 100 hopitals. I don't know much about Durham Regional. Duke is Duke, but it is NOT nurse friendly, very MD/Resident driven and the pay is low. Wake Med is also good, but I think that you will find that overall Rex has the most to offer. When I worked there before, I worked in the float pool and was all over the hospitals..ALL of the nurses are great. A team effort no matter what floor I was on. Good Luck and if you end up at Rex, I will be working on 4 east...

Hey bonesrn,

Where in PA do you live? I'm in Harrisburg PA relocating to Raleigh in July.

It's great to read your input about Rex! I was honestly a bit bummed before about not getting an offer at Wake Med (since it's a trauma center and I'll be in the ED), but it sounds like I'll be very happy at Rex. Yay!

I did a clinical rotation when I was in school at Duke on 4 East - isn't that Pulmonary/Renal (or have I confused 4 East and 4 West)? I liked that floor; the NAs especially were AWESOME. (That was actually my first clinical and a very positive experience.) My dad passed away in the ICU there three years ago and the nurses were FABULOUS I'd love to work there, but I'm at DUMC mainly because of the loan repayment the Duke Health System gives to Duke University nursing school grads.

I love the floor I'm on at Duke (9300 - Adult Oncology); the managers and the staff I work with are amazing (not to mention the patients). We also have Magnet status now, so I'd like to think that some things have changed since you left (again, I could be wrong, but I'd really like to hope so!).

My mother had her knee replaced at Durham Regional, and while I adore her ortho surgeon and his staff, I was less impressed with the floor she was on - but I'll keep my personal opinions personal.

I tried to re-edit again but it dumped me...I wanted to add that our doctors/residents/interns/fellows up on 9300 (we are, after all, an academic, teaching institution, replete with the requisite hierarchies) are also fantastic. I find them neither intimidating nor condescending; I've seen them consult nurses for their input into patient care decisions every day I've worked. I also wanted to say that classmates who had clinical rotations at Durham Regional seemed a bit disappointed in their experiences there - which is sad.

Specializes in CCU Tele ED M/S (favs).

Done both, REX.
