Anyone work as a Independent Nurse Contractor?

Published

I have a few yrs exp. as an RN under my belt and I was thinking about doing the independent contracting thing, i've searched threads on here and on the net and there's not to much info, perhaps a nurse who is a contractor and chime in and answer some questions? How do you determine what to charge? Who in the hospital do you talk to about setting up these contracts? Is it a difficult process? How do you figure overtime? Any info is appreciated!

What kind of "independent contracting?"

I am not sure what type of contracting you are thinking about, but I am an independent contractor. I am contracted through a company to do in home training visits. The company calls to see if I am avaliable, i accept or decline, I make the appointment and turn in documentation, they pay me. I do this on the side of my regular job. It pays well and only takes a few hours.

its the same thing as agency work, except you dont have the middle man (the agency) to pay, so therefore you are a one person agency. For example i would contract with a hospital just like an agency would, and say "i will work 40hrs per week @$60 hr for 13 weeks", they sign the contract and then send me a check for my time worked, now i have to pay my own taxes, etc., so you are a one man operation, you get paid more because you have no middle man to pay. You might think, "wow, $60hr!? thats big money", but its actually cheaper for the hospital to hire a contractor then to hire a full time RN with benefits, etc., therefore contractors are utilized whenever they are available because it saves the hospital money, but the contractor makes big $$, so its win win for both parties, this is from my understanding.

Ok ya there you go, maybe you could provide some more details? The contracting I was thinking about is through the hospital.
