I start nursing school next month and have been telling myself that I will learn to deal with my fear of blood and eventually become desensitized to it. A few days ago I started freaking out. The thought of blood made me nervous earlier because I worked myself up so much. Anyone here have a fear of blood that you overcame? Any tips/ reassuring comments? I almost chickened out of nursing school earlier which would really disappoint me. HELP!
Thanks! :redbeathe

Years ago when I was 17 I became a medical asst. During the pre-entrance physical exam I almost passed out when they drew my blood! It was the first time I had it done. I just naturally got over it though - got desensitized as you mentioned - by the end of the course. It got to the point where I offered people to practice on my arm. Even offered to train a front office girl using my arm but she was too afraid to try!
Being out of the medical field for many years I again get a little weak at the site of blood but I know I will overcome it again during school, as I'm sure you will too.

I feel much better after reading your post. Thank you so much.
You will be fine.
I do have other things I worry about dealing with but because of my blood experience I have faith that I will be able to handle the dirtier aspects of this job.

Absolutely! I would feel faint everytime I saw blood or had blood drawn myself. As I watched open heart surgery a few semesters ago, I realized blood didn't scare me any more (I was inches from the man's heart---awesome!). Just think about what blood is from a scientific point of view and you will feel better, I think. Good luck!
