Anyone nervous as heck about school and clinicals?

Published

I took a CNA class a couple of years ago through ACC, and I did my hospital clinicals at Littleton Hospital. Some of the nurses were not so nice, and it actually made me question whether or not I wanted to go into the field because I didn't want to have to do the clinicals with not so nice people again. I really want to be a nurse though, so I am doing it anyway, but I am worried about my experience in clinicals again. I mean, it can really turn you off being treated so badly by people you are trying to learn from and help. I know it's annoying training sometimes, I have to do it at my current job in the IT industry, but this really worries me sometimes that some of these nurses are so fried about being understaffed and all that, that they take it out on the students. Since I did my clinicals at Littleton, I delivered my daughter there, and the nurses I had during L&D were AMAZING and very nice. I even had a student in my birth, a student from ACC, and I made very sure I was being extra nice to her as I'm sure she was nervous about the whole thing.

Anyway, sorry to blabber on, I just worry about that. I know once I am done with school and get my license, I will love what I do, but I am so nervous about the process of getting there.

I am worried about it too, but I am so determined that I know it will be worth it. I think that if you truly want to be a nurse and know that you will really love what you do, then you will be able to survive if you run into not-so-nice clinical instructors. After all, maybe you can one day become a nice preceptor for somebody else. :) Keep your chin up, if your heart is really set on nursing, then go for it and don't let anything get in your way. It will be long, and it will be hard, but it will be worth it too (I hope). ;)

As they tell you if you were going on stage for the first time just try to view them as something funny. If that does not work then try and remove yourself from the situation. You can and will get through it.

I am planning on entering a nursing program next week. What are you expected to do in the clinicals. My sister who is also in a nursing program is giving me horror stories on what she is expected to do.

I just graduated nursing school (BS in Nursing). I know exactly how all of you feel. My best advice is to stick with it and like the saying goes...this too shall pass. I cannot even believe that I am done. It truly is a blessing. I have completed one part of my education and am now trying to study for the NCLEX!! GOD HELP ME! :roll

You are going to have good professors that may motivate you to learn and yes there are some professors who have an inferiority complex causing things to be more difficult than what they are. Just stick to your guns and set your mind to it and when you finish your sequence of courses you can go back and rub it in their faces.

Listen to your other colleagues from school on who to register for and who to stay away from.

Do all of your papers before they are due (not two days before) to avoid the stress.

Start reviewing the material from the first lecture. Just read your notes and try to understand them not just memorize (I battled with this until I graduated). If you do this then studying for the exam will not be one huge cram session.

Leave your ego at the door when you enter the classroom and help all of your colleagues and they too will help you. Beware of the users I must warn you. In my school, many of the students thought they were genius' because of their high GPA's that is until they took their first exam and bombed! Everyone received a major reality check. After that exam many of them realized that they needed to ban together with other students to make itthrough and study.

Do not make comments about anyone to anybody in your program. Remember those who bring a sack leave with two filled.

Remember, it is ok to cry. I did and it made me feel a whole lot better. I also learned by my third semester that I was more important than the book and began making time for myself which was something i stopped doing once I entered the program. Try to mix some leisure activities with studying and YES IT IS POSSIBLE. All work and no play makes Jane/Jack a dull boy or girl.

Most of all..... Good Luck to all of you !!!
