I'm considering writing an article on the "nursing shortage" for my town paper. Does anyone know if anyone (e.g., ANA?) is keeping track of how many RNs are getting hired as nurses in the first year of licensure and what kinds of jobs they are taking?

Seems like this would be a good project for some nursing organization. Media dissemination of this data would be good for those who are looking for work. New grads would love to have a convenient list of areas that are more prone to hire.

Problem being that people have posted this type of information here and what were once "fruitious markets" have become swamped and people have flocked to the "advertised areas." I think a lot of people in various threads have already created suggestions of areas of the country that are still hiring new grads. I personally don't believe it's a smart idea to post on a public forum for thousands to see where you were successful in finding a job. I've seen several even include the department they were hired for! I wonder what a hospital must think after they hire a new grad and suddenly and suspiciously they are innundated with applicants from all over the place?
Do you actually know that this has happened? Have you read it happening somewhere? I'm curious; I haven't. It happened in the Great Depression, and I know it happens on a smaller scale all the time: people move to where the work is and then they tell their friends. Sometimes there aren't enough local people to fill the need.
As for word of mouth advertising online, the Internet is a giant megaphone. Those hospitals in need get free advertising. I expect that when an HR organization is inundated with applications from all over they just think the word got out that they were hiring and that there's a lot of new nurses looking for jobs. There are too many ways to find out where the jobs are that have nothing to do with word of mouth. Every hospital has a website.
But that's not what I'm looking for here. I wanted to know if any organization, such as the ANA and it's state chapters are keeping track of first year graduates. I will have to call mine and find out.

Well I don't know about other peope but the Seattle/Tacoma area is still pretty tight. I have been trying and the only hospitals that seems to take people it your lucky would be the Fransican system and Mulitcare ie Tacama general. But even then it was hard, I had an interview with a multicare hospital and 10 others were with me some from Portland! I think only 2 got the job and I'm pretty sure it was because they knew the staff! Seems like if you don't know the staff or already work on the floor you can forget it!

My school keeps track, sort of. They send out a survey and ask if you are employed, but not where or how. They have previously posted their results on their website as a sales pitch. I don't know how much longer they will do that.
