Anyone in Houston?

U.S.A. Texas

Hello,

I am attempting to decide on a nursing school in the Houston area. Unfortunately, unless I win the lottery, I can not afford to go to school for 4 years to get a BSN. I will have to get the ADN first, then try to find a job and work a few years and then go back for a BSN. Does anyone have any experience with or know someone that has attended or is currently attending any nursing schools in Houston? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :)

So...run....don't even THINK about HCC....

OMG = oh my gosh...

I am so sorry to hear about your experience with HCC. There are just too many negative comments about them adding up. I decided a few weeks ago that I would not apply for their nursing program. The only thing I might have to do with HCC is take my pre-req's. That is only because the campus is convenient and after that I will apply somewhere else. I feel that everything happens for a reason, it is not always revealed at the time you want it to be though.

I am also considering North Harris. I just have not made a decision yet.

I hope you get accepted to their program if that is what you desire.

I have a question, what is dh? Are you able to transfer any of your classes from HCC to North Harris?

I went to San Jacinto for my ADN, and took a 'fast track' that was 1 1/2 years. It was tough and a good education. My sister went to HCC for her ADN. She did well but didn't give the program a godd review. Alvin has a good rep, but Galveston CC (?) does not.

I am looking online at San Jacinto and their catalog shows a 5 semester ADN program. Was the program you took faster than that?

I'm also looking to get into an ADN program in Houston. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into HCC?

I went thru a year of the ADN program at HCC. I left due to a serious family illness but w/ good standing and a solid "B" gpa. I left because they are very much a cliquish and politic's type program....

I am FAR from a bad student....I can still write a care plan w/ one hand tied behind my back and I have NEVER had one come back looking like zoro got ahold of it w/ a red pen....but when I notified my clinical instructor that I did not feel I could SAFELY give med even under her guidence one day at clinical because the fact I had been in the ER ALL night, (LITERALLY and only drove home to get my uniform and actually dressed when I arrived at the hospital)..w/ my dh who had just been told he had a brain tumor and was told "suck it up".

Yet other classmates REPEATEDLY would call in and say she would be late because of car troubles, daycare issues etc and were always excused...yet me being in an er...w/ documentation to prove it..wasn't enough?? Burns my butt really.

It was the ONLY time I had ever not performed to standard..I went to my mentor nurse told her the situation and that I would not be taking charge of my patient and then left a message for the instructor on her ans service (she dissappeared HOURS at a time and wouldn't answer pages) that I was on my way back to campus for further counseling about my options.

Unfortunately they are all so busy being worried about stepping on each others toes that there was little choice....I was not in the hospital for my clinical and I would be kicked from the program OR I could leave on my own...as I had used my other 'absence' days the previous week taking my dh to the neurologist and for an MRI.

I made a decision that day....I cried and cried but HCC will NEVER EVER get a penny of my money ever again...not for my education (and it wasn't that great of a program either..mostly theory..very skills lacking) or that of my children's in the future.

I could have reapplied and returned w/in the next 3 yrs but if anything I'm a woman that stands by her principles even when it costs us time, money and effort....at least I can sleep knowing that I left a nice long resignation letter in my file that the instructor who was counseling me BEGGED me not to, but I call them as I see them and feel I 100% did the right thing.

and now.....all that is past...and I'm applying to NHCC (north harris) LVN program next week...a full 4yrs later and know that everything happens for a reason and I can be confident that I am being true to myself, my patients ~even if I'm just a student and my family.

:)

So...run....don't even THINK about HCC....

Wow...I just applied for pharmacology with HCC but was thinking about what other options there are...I want to do the ADN...With N. Harris can you start in the Spring or only in the Fall?

I just have to reply as I am an ALUMNI of both schools, Houston Baptist University and HCC in the Medical Center. Yes I have had my share of woes with both of them. But GOD is bigger than any of the problems I encountered at either of them. I offer no other suggestion but to follow what GOD says about your situation. I made

it through both, a Bachelors from HBU and an Associates in Nursing from HCC. I do however agree that HCC is sort of clickish and I guarantee you the Instructor's initials,in whom you were referring, was H.S. if I am right...please let me know or could it be B.G. I had them all for something and wouldn't surprise me who it was... But, thank the LORD JESUS HE saw fit to bring me through, and my time there was also rough, might I add it was rough at HBU too... Praise YOU FATHER for being GOD and being GOD all by YOURSELF!!! Hallelujah!!!! :rotfl:

If the H.S. stands for Hermoine Sullivan then you have met the devil herself. I will NOT go into all the horrendous things this lady has done. I have gone through so much crap at Houston Community College and withstood it, but she has pretty much made me, for the first time in my life, feel like I cannot finish what I started. She has made our entire Pharmacology class feel like a failure.

HCC sucks and I warn anyone even thinking about going there to just forget it exists and try all other options. I would not even recommend it as a last resort, sorry. I am not a vengful person but this school has pushed my limits.

Unless HCC is the only building left and the rest of the world was on fire I would not recommend even stepping foot on its premises, you wont get far anyways.

Anyone from the Houston area know of good schools I might look into transferring to other then San Jacinto? I have all my pre-reqs done. I am barely passing Pharmacology with Mrs. Sullivan (85% of the class is failing) and for the first time in my life feel like I cant finish what I started.

Any advice? Thanks.

Just to let you know Houston Baptist University is VERY expensive!!

As far as CC's go, San Jac has one of the best programs...Good luck!

Specializes in psych.

Just a heads up too, if you dont live in brazoria county and plan on going to alvin, expect to pay for it. I took my micro from there and had to pay 300 for one class because I lived in galveston county. I thought that was really expensive. But i heard it was a great program also SJ has a good rep/

Yeah, I would love to go to HBU but the cost is way too high. I went to LeTourneau University my first year of college, which is a private school also, and tuition for one SEMESTER not including books was $12, 8xx. I can imagine HBU is around the same. Sometimes I wish my parents were poor again so I could get financial aid. I grew up poor and then when I finally NEED to be poor so I can get financial aid my parents get good jobs. Haha, that is so sad. The state does not understand my parents money is NOT mine. I work at Wal-Mart and can barely keep my gas tank full let alone pay for college. I am currently taking out loans and struggling to stay at Community College. I'm tough though, so I will stick it through and hopefully, eventually, nursing school will work out.

Oh NO! I'm so disheartened hearing about HCC!! I do know that I have emailed their secretary and she hasn't been the nicest but I thought oh well! Also, she told me there was no waiting list....now I know why! I want to go to nursing school but I have to go in the evening. HCC is the only program that I have found that offers evening classes. Does anybody know of anywhere else in the Houston area that I can get my ADN in the evening? TIA!

Specializes in NICU Level III.

Ms. Sullivan was the devil incarnate. I kept my head low, tried not to cry and skimmed by with a B, only because I memorized every action of ev ery drug and did whatever she told me to do. I received an A in every other clinical I took at HCC.

She needs to be fired.

My only advice was to deal with it. I was absolutely NOT going to let that demon from he%$ get in the way of my degree. I could afford no other option, so I played the hand that was dealt to me.

It was hard, but totally worth it. I am doing very well in nursing now.

and FWIW, I passed the NCLEX first try without a sweat. HCC prepares you well for that exam. I picked up my clinical skills by working as a student nurse at Hermann Hospital.
