I just submitted all of my stuff and Im hoping to get accepted. Anyone else in the area hoping to start on the January 20th start date? Also, any advice from anyone who has been through Kaplan/Maric's ADN program would be appreciated. I started doing the community college thing but Im 34 and I dont have time to wait on a 3 yr waiting list once I finish all prereqs.
Just on a personal note. Despite some short comings I will still be checking out Kaplan's marginally accredited ADN program in San Diego this month. However, I still didn't like the idea of everyone over there playing dumb when I called asked what the tuition was. They just kept saying they didn't know and would forward me to someone's voice mail. Anyhow, I have lived in SD for years, but right now I'm in Arizona as I own a house here. I am going to look into two separate private programs out here in AZ also. I won't mention their names until I learn more about them.
John,
So true but my concern is having to do all of my gen ed over (what I dont have so far at least) if I decide to go BSN. Another concern is that today's MA is yesterday's BS and today's BA is yesterday's AA. Im ok with just getting my RN and working now, but what if it bites me in the butt later and continuing education becomes next to impossible because I have to repeat all this stuff?
I agree with the shady sales side of all of these schools. U of Phoenix (who I also heard takes Kaplan credits... I have a call in to them.) and National do it too. Bryman did the same thing when I went for my Medical Assisting. It makes me feel like Im at a used car lot and really rubs me the wrong way on the professional side of things. Whatever.... I just want to finish and make sure Im not making a $50k mistake that will end up taking me more years in the long run. Like I said, Im not even sure Ill need to go back for my BSN... but what IF... and then its a nightmare to continue?
Re: Anyone hoping to start Kaplan San Diegos ADN (RN) Program in January 09?OK U of Phoenix WILL take Kaplan/ Maric ADN Credits, so Im fine with going now. As long as I can continue to a WASC school for my BSN, Im good. :) Phew!
I was wondering if the OP could give us and update on her schooling? I'm really interested in thsi school from the ability to starting and completing the program in 20 months. I talked with a counselor, she told me with my cna class and completed pre-reqs the program would last 16 months.
Any feedback on financing the degree would be awesome.
Hi CostalGuy. I actually didnt get in on the Jan start. They wanted me to have more recent medical experience, so I am working in a Dr's office until I can reapply. The last time I worked as a medical asst was 5 years ago. I also only got a 79 on my TEAS the first time and didnt have time to retake it ( I only had a few days of studying in and have never taken Physics or Chemistry). I am studying to retake that as well and Im hoping for a May start. The deadline to apply for that start date is March 14th, I think. I know that if I actually study for the TEAS, I can get my score up and ensure a spot. They let you apply if you get 70% or above on the test, but if you dont get at least 80%, RETAKE it. If you need info on that, you can email me directly at MistiPace at Gmail. Keep me posted on whether or not you apply! Also, what prereqs have you done? Because I was told that it was 20 months regardless of whether your prereqs were totally done or you had never taken a class. I was told if you HAD completed some, that it would just lighten your workload and, of course, would be less expensive.

Maybe this is too little, too late for some of you...but I'm a current Kaplan student and I'm about 1/2 way through the program. My word of advice if you are considering Kaplan: DON'T DO IT! They are a newer program and seem to be working out their curriculum at the student's expense. I watched as more than half of us failed the class yesterday. Yes, I know nursing school is supposed to be hard but they way the schedule currently stands, they are crunching a 5 unit, 16 week course into 8. Meanwhile, most of the students are having to retake (= more $$$) and then some don't even make it through. I watched students get dropped from the program yesterday because of this. They walked away with nothing but a huge amount of debt. I don't feel so much that I failed though, I feel like the program is failing. I'm not a slacker, I worked very hard for my failing grade and now in order to get my degree I have to pay more money ($4k to be exact) to retake the same class, w/ the same schedule and same instructor. The reason I say it that way is not only are they cramming 2 of the core nursing courses (med surg 2 and 3) into 8 weeks a piece which is an accelerated course, it is being taught by an inexperienced instructor. It doesn't end there though, she has no respect for students, she is sarcastic and down right mean. There have been several complaints about her and the course but nothing has changed. They know it's an issue but nothing has changed. Meanwhile, students are having to pay to retake or worse yet flunk out of the program. I regret this decision everyday. Please explore all your options and feel free to message me if you have any questions.

WOAH!!! WAIT! Kaplan lead me to believe that I could get my BSN from U of Phoenix OR National after completing the ADN there. They made it sound like after going to Kaplan, I could get a BSN at national or phoenix and then, since those are WASC, that I could go on to ANY other univ. to complete my Masters. They made it sound like the ADN credits only transferred to National, Kaplan or Phoenix. Im REALLY upset right now and will be calling Kaplan, Phoenix and National to figure out options. Thank for bringing this to our attention!!!!
