I am almost finished with a 12 week PCU residency. I am a new grad and I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of nervous of being on my own soon! I am most worried about time management/falling behind since it is an extremely busy floor with lots of admits and transfers at night. The majority of my co workers seem very supportive of new people, which is great. Anyone have any tips on how they survived the first few months on their own?

I'm also a new grad working 12hr night shifts on the medical unit at a hospital. I only got 6 weeks orientation and have now been on my own for almost 3 weeks. What I did was get a good brain sheet to help me organize my night. I also printed off the policies and protocols for giving blood, heparin drips, hypoglycemia etc. and put them on my clipboard for easy access. Also on my clipboard are the main numbers I need like pharmacy, lab, respiratory etc.
Everyone on my unit has been extremely helpful and all have great teamwork....so that helps a lot!
Good luck!!

I know that Iam a new nurse and use my i touch. that has a recorder and record procedures and label it. Just be careful and record where there are no conversation so you dont break hippa laws and only use the words patient or resident. It's not a phone so I can carry it with me and down loaded tabers dictionary and other apps to help me out. I love having a drug book in my pocket. I just wish they had an app to read the doctors writing.
