Anyone else hating morning shift?

Published

I just got a positon in med-surg in January and I just completed orientation. I love, love, love the people that I work with. The nurses are very nice, helpful, the techs are awesome and for the most part many of the doctors are very pleasant.None of them have cursed me out yet. lol. I love working 12 hour shifts but hate first shift. It is just too busy and hectic for me.

In the middle of giving meds dressing changes doctors are calling to talk to me. Radiology, cat scan calling, family memebers thinking I am their loved ones personal private nurse, pharmacy calling, the lab, and tons of new orders and of coorifice infiltrating IVs and who knows what else will pop up I feel so overwhelmed at times. I know I have to learn how to prioritize better and I will improve as time go on I just not liking days right now in med-surg.

When I first accepted the position it was for nights but the nurse manager begged me to go on days because 2 travel nurses were leaving soon so I went. Right now the nurse patient ratio is 6to 1 but that will soon change to 4 to 1 because the nurse manager has hired 14 more new grads. I am learning a lot but damn this is to much. Does anyone else feel this way?

I SOOOO could have written this. I started 4 weeks ago on the unit I already teched on for 2 yrs. spent the 2 yrs on nights and was fully aware I would orient on days....but I HATE waking up at 3:30 in the morning...and I have just been informed that I will be on day orientation for another 3 weeks....just because that's the way it works for everyone...no exceptions...

I just want to get back to sleeping from 6a to 2-3 pm, and get my body back to it. I miss my night crew....days is nice, but it's not "my peeps" ya know...

It is such a relief to see other people saying this. I've been hired on 11-7, but I'm orienting on days for another week and I'm just floundering. I don't sleep well to be up at 4:30 to drive to work, and I am NOT a morning person! I also am not able to multitask well enough yet to deal with the million things that are going on, on days. I can't wait to start nights the week after next.
